Lawrence Joe Shifflett
Lawrence Joe Shifflett, age 84, passed away on November 4, 2024. He was born on November 6, 1939 in Clairemont, TX to Lawrence “Doc” Bruce and Oleta Mae (Blasingame) Shifflett. Lawrence married Eula Maye (Havens) in 1987 in Weatherford, TX and they celebrated 7 years together before her death in 1994.
Joe loved animals from the beginning, so his first dog was a German shepherd named Shadow. Shadow would follow Joe to the pig pens, chicken pens, and milking the cows. Even though Joe participated in athletics his animals always came first. After graduation, Joe went on a wheat harvest to Montana, he liked the money but returned to Texas in the fall. September 20, 1958; Joe joined the Army and headed to Fort Carson, CO where he was active in the Army Medical Corp. He then went to Okinawa, Japan where he practiced parachuting and prepared to go to Vietnam. While active in the military, he received a Good Conduct Medal, expert (pistol and M-56), marksman, rifle badge, parachutist, and later became 100% disabled. Joe took a break in his military career to attend Texas Tech in 1961 but by Christmas he traded his books for a job in the oilfields of West Texas, but later rejoined the military.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife: Maye Shifflett; parents: “Doc” and Mae Shifflett; step-son: James Powers; sisters: Iva lee Murphy, and Birdie Nell Lee; brothers: Lloyd Bruce Shifflett, and Wiley Matthew Shifflett; niece: Diannah Barrett; nephews: James Lee Jr. and Levi Decker.
He is survived by his sister: Mary Franklin and husband Norman of Christoval, TX; nephews: Bill Murphy of Mentone, TX; Terry Lee and wife Patti of Weatherford, TX; Scott Shifflett and Gregg Shifflett of Novice; Ryan Shifflett and wife Natalie of Groves, TX; Damon Shifflett and wife Sheryl of Texas City, TX; nieces: Debby Decker of Odessa, TX; Kelly Posey and husband Danny of Mertzon, TX; Pamela Randolph and husband Rory of Christoval, TX; Samantha Beauchamp and husband James of Gouldbusk, TX; great-nephews: Justin and wife Gabby of Anson, TX; Jason and wife Kristy of Trent, TX; Kyle and wife Heather of Abilene, TX; Jonathan and wife K’Cee of Summersville, SC; Todd Thompson of Denton, TX; Taylor Thompson of Louisville, CA Cody and wife Courtney of Jackson, TN; Parker and Peyton of Mertzon, TX; and great-nieces: Rebecca of Rolla, MO; Jessi of Snyder, TX; Lisa and husband Jason of Bonham, TX; Carrie Lee of Tye, TX; Vanessa and husband Tony of Lookeba, OK; Nicole and husband Josh of Weatherford, TX; Jacklyn of Gouldbusk, TX; Ashley and husband Tommy of Mount Juliet, TN; 35 great-great nieces and nephews; and 6 great-great-great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
A graveside memorial with military honors will be held at 3pm, Tuesday November 12, 2024 at the Kermit Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will include Todd Thompson, Taylor Thompson, and Jacklyn Beauchamp.
