Sagat. His timming was perfect to avoid and counter the "fly like a butterfly,sting like a bee" of Cunningham attacks
@StoneXue Жыл бұрын
Very key thing that you mentioned but completely negated as a factor was in the 2nd fight they changed the rule for this fight so Sagat could not trap the leg and sweep. That was a key tactic for him in the first fight that he was not allowed to do in the 2nd fight. Side kicks only work against a Thai boxer IF you cannot sweep. This is why this fight went the way it did.

They didn't take away the leg sweep, or low kicks, they took away the leg grab, it did put Sagat in a disadvantage but Sagat to be honest wanted to knock him out, hint his prediction of knocking him out in the 5th round 🤷🏿♂️ so I think he abandoned the leg sweeps, at one time Cunningham even jumped over a low kick, so in reality the leg grabs were taken away. The rule changes in the second fight was the difference. It took away many of Sagat’s usual weapons. Interesting to see these two fight. Personally I’m not a huge fan of rules which strip the main weapons from Muay Thai fighters while leaving the opponent with a full armoury. What always bothers me about these Muay Thai vs Western kickboxing fights is that they never have a fight that uses full Muay Thai rule set. The fights always have the Thais getting major elements of their game getting taken away, so It's difficult to really judge who is really better. The first fight was close, but I think Sagat edged out Cunningham with those sweeps. Banning Sagat from catching kicks all but forced him to change up the strats, and really screwed him before the bell rang. Cunningham seems to like keeping that leg lingering up for those defensive side kicks. I think that if Sagat would have been able to catch kicks, the second fight would have went very differently. Sagat may very well may have KO'd Cunningham by the 5th if he could catch a kick, throw his stance off, and level him with a power punch.

I agree that it's hard for Thai fighters to have to change things up but doing the fight by Western Kickboxing rules makes the most sense. Thai fighters can't use elbows or catch kicks but if they did a fight by Muay Thai rules the Kickboxer would have to spend a long time to perfect techniques that they don't use. It's easier to use less than you know than to add new techniques to your arsenal especially because good striking takes a long time to develop, and no one wants to have a year long training camp for one fight. Someone is always going to be at a disadvantage depending on what rules you use but the Thai fighters are at less of a disadvantage using Kickboxing rules compared to Kickboxers using Muay Thai rules.
@mcspud Жыл бұрын
@@darkcircle899 "but doing the fight by Western Kickboxing rules makes the most sense." But then you can't say its "muay thai vs kickboxing", because its not. It's just kickboxing vs kickboxing, and kickboxing is the demonstrably inferior striking style.

@@darkcircle899 yeah but instead of picking one of the two rulesets they could have settled for mixed rules, this way the thais don’t have complete disadvantage. @darkcircle899 Жыл бұрын
@@mcspud Yeah it's not a Kickboxing vs Muay Thai fight is a Kickboxer vs Muay Thai fighter fight. They are both competing in kickboxing. Also saying that Kickboxing is just the inferior style altogether definitely isn't true. Kickboxing still has its uses and is good to learn. Notice that there is no person in the UFC who does pure Muay Thai they all take some things from Muay Thai some things from Kickboxing and some things from boxing to put together the best striking they can. It's not an all-or-nothing type thing just because pure Muay Thai has a good matchup against pure Kickboxing that doesn't make Kickboxing useless or interior in general.

@user-eb2kv7bg4t yep...that's what I said in my initial comment about the risk of the leg being grabbed. For fighters with shitty takedown defense, they'll get taken down regardless by a good grappler. Might as well fend off the leg kicks until that happens. Low kicks, especially to the back of the knee have become a huge weapon to incapacitate their opponent. In the past, the kicks were typically higher on the leg into the quadriceps and some hamstring.

@@SilentRage01They essentially removed Sagat's win con and made it so he couldn't counter the punishable sidekicks. Cunningham won the fight but it doesn't really mean anything since its a fight he should have won considering the rules. It says a lot when one of the best kick boxers are scared to fight with Mauy Thai rules.

Cunningham lost badly the 1st fight, he was on the ground most of the time, none the less he was an incredible fighter. The 2nd fight make me lose all respect for Cunningham and his team, the change of rules for huuuge advantage in his favor was disgusting. Sidekicks do work, but only when you are not allowed to grab and/or sweep.

Great video. Don’t think I ever heard of Cunningham before this. But funny enough my fiancé and I recently watched No Retreat,No Surrender. When watching it I was thinking this guy must’ve been an actual fighter.

I was at the second fight, it was the big first kickboxing event I had ever seen, Bill Wallace was there to do a comedy sparring demo making Sifu Rick Spain look like a beginner. My memory of the later rounds is pretty much just Sakad chopping away with his right low kick at Cunningham's forward left shin. Everybody there knew they were seeing something very special, two fighters clearly in great condition that were a cut above in every way.

How does it prove side kicks work against Muay Thai when you aren't allowed to grab the kick?

Side kicks are a lot harder to catch than Muay Thai teeps

Full muay Thai rule he would have been died LOL, "Any rules and will take any fight" lol but didn't want full muay Thai rules. He was fighting handicap both fights ... wish they did a 3rd fight full muay Thai rules it would have been really interesting to see.

These 2 had all, but Sagat won the 1st match to me. Their technique, rythm and condition are just outstanding. Cunningam should have replaced side kicks by front kicks in the rules of the first fight. He shows most high level hands and kicks techniques and his check hook was just shocking. It would probably be a different story with elbows and all the stuff. Congratulations to both.

THe second fight Peter made a great adjustment. He stopped trying to land the first attack, and instead used it as bait and was better prepared to follow it up with combos. The first fight Sagat took control be evading the opening strike and countering well.

I missed the first rematch? It went straight from the first match to "rematch again"? Why was there a no-leg-catch rule in the last fight but not the first one? Is it not allowed in American kickboxing? Were elbows disallowed in all their fights? Do we know if Cunningham ever fought any Thais under full Muay Thai rules?
