There is a symbol like U which stands for union and U as an English alphabet is used to denote universal set and n is used to denoted the number of elements in a set which is also known as Cardinal nunber or Cardinality.

Let me explain it to you in two ways because I don't know which one would be more comprehensive to you. (I) In the language of sets theory the word "and" after the symbol of 'belongs to' represents the operation 'intersection'. (II) If an element belongs to two distinct sets simultaneously, it must be a common element between them and thus it must belong to the intersection of those two sets. Which can have any value. For example 2 or 3 or 1/2 etc are unique and specific constants but a or b or c can have any value so these are arbitrary constants. Like for a number of expressions as x + 1, x + 2, x + 3, x + 4, ...... can be expressed as x + a, where a can have any integral value. Hopefully I answered your question satisfactorily 😊
