Lawsuit filed against Detroit judge who scolded teen, had her put in jail uniform

The family of the Detroit teenager who was handcuffed and forced to wear jail clothes during a field trip to a court room is filing a lawsuit against the judge who made it happen.

The supreme court has ruled that vulgar and disrespectful speech, even in a court room, is protected under you right to free expression. What we have is someone with a miniscule amount of power trying to superimpose their own ego onto the court system. Fact is if a judge lacks the emotional control to deal with a lippy teen, why are we expecting a tired teenager who isn't there because they have to be to show a higher emotional reasoning? She was sleeping and not bothering anyone, so got he pressed and acted like an asshole. End of story.

Years ago there was a program called Scared Straight where parents signed permission slips for problematic hand picked students to visit a prison to be frightened into good behavior. This was not that at all. I wasn’t a sleeper in high school but I did have a job that was draining. Falling asleep doesn’t always mean disrespect. Regardless, it wasn’t called for. Sounds like the judge was presumptuous about what kind of family the young lady came from as if no one would object to such treatment. I have sleep apnea too and I use to zone out a lot uncontrollably. I actually hated it. It was embarrassing to not be able to focus. I digress.

That’s a lot different than being put in a jail cell and dressed in a jail uniform. The judge basically made her a prisoner for falling asleep. She shouldn’t have fallen asleep, but the judge went too far.
