What every traveler with firearms needs to know are the rules for all the states you be in. What is legal in your home state is often illegal elsewhere.

2 tips: first, never just give your key to the officer. The proper procedure is they will ask YOU to unlock it; then they will open the case. Then YOU will lock it again. Second, if you have a hard sided luggage, you can use that as the "gun case" even though it has all your clothes and stuff in it. As long as you put a real lock on it (not a TSA lock) and follow the rest of the procedures, you can use it both as a gun case and as your regular luggage. But it will be screened and picked up (in oversize) separately. You can't carry it on of course! Great way to secure ALL of your stuff and not have to use those crappy TSA locks for the rest of your stuff.

I had a fun experience, where after declaring and opening the case, the agent asked if it was empty, which i answered in the affirmative, then proceeded to say "Show me". They did not like the fact I attempted to do just as they asked, apparently the agent was referring to the magazine.

The plastic gun case that came with the gun works fine. Plus it is light weight and it will interfere less with the weight limits placed on checked in luggage. I would would also attach the case to the frame of your bag with a cable gun lock.

I'm currently looking into this. I live in a Constitutional Carry state and I'm going to another Constitutional Carry state for two weeks in June. I don't want to be unarmed that long.

I have never been asked to open my case. The form they fill out is normally taped to the outside of the case. Once the case is labeled and put back in the bag, the bag goes with other checked luggage. Sometimes they tell you to wait 10 minutes in case there is an issue. I normally get by bag off of the carousel on the other end.

What about the Amtrak auto train? Amtrak/TSA rules listed are for stations that offer checked baggage service of which Lorton VA and Sanford FL do not. Does leaving your gun and ammunition packed, as described in your video, in the trunk of your vehicle satisfy their requirements?

What concerns me is a layover in which the gun is "illegal" in that state but legal where you come from and go to. Serious problem in the North East where Logan and JFK are the two most likely places you fly out of or can get diverted to in bad weather. Too many stories of NY ruining peoples lives over checked weapons just passing through the airport.

During a normal layover, including bad weather, you don’t get your luggage, so that’s not an issue. That being said, I will pay more and take longer flights to avoid NY & CA……just in case.

Don't bring a gun you like, but do bring extra locks, because the aforementioned idiots WILL cut the locks on your gun case, even after you specifically ask them if they need you to open the case for them. Every 10 minutes, ask them if the gun has already passed security, if there's any problem, is it on the plane already. No matter what they tell you, it's a lie, you're only asking to get it on the record you did. They will break into your case anyways, you will miss your flight, and that gun will be lost forever. Then you file your insurance claim, buy a new gun, and next time you know better to just drive wherever you're going.
