A policeman once called me and told me to come to the police station to discuss an incident. I contacted a lawyer and asked for advice. She said, go and see him, “Say nothing” I went online and downloaded a copy of “How to deal with a police interrogation” put out by the QLD police, what was their advice? “SAY NOTHING” I followed her advice and the policeman after realizing I wasn’t going to talk simply walked out saying “ we will get back to you. I never heard from him again, end of the story. SAY NOTHING, SAY NOTHING, SAY NOTHING, SAY NOTHING, SAY NOTHING. Tip: act confident don’t be intimidated. There are a lot of people sitting in jail because they opened their mouths.

If you have done something, the worst thing you can do is talk to the police. If you have done nothing, the worst thing you can do is talk to the police.

If someone calls & claims to be law enforcement - HANG UP! You are under NO obligation to tell them the sky is blue.

Absolutely. And one of the reasons is that you have no idea whether this person is actually a member of law enforcement. It could some kind of scam. Assume it is and hang up. A real member of law enforcement will come to your door with a warrant, search or arrest, if they actually have evidence against you.

Mr. Detective, if you have enough information to arrest me, charge me, and convict me, why do you need to talk to me. If you do not have enough information to arrest me, charge me, and convict me, then why should I talk to you?

But don't fall for scammers pretending to be cops make sure it's legit
@TerryProthero

No. Just treat anyone who calls claiming to be a cop like a scammer. Say you are not interested and hang up. You have no way of knowing if it's a real cop, and you don't want to talk to them even if they are.

What if he says he wants to talk to you because you may have witnessed a crime? How would you know if he was being honest? (And most people wouldn't want to impede a police investigation if they could help with it.)

You don't have to call them back. I once got a call from a detective (the caller ID said it was from my former employer) and he left a voicemail. I never called him back because I knew he was just trying to bait me. I had called her (my former employer, named Barbara) by mistake when I meant to call my cousin Barbara (right above the former employer's name on my list of contacts) and, when I realised my mistake, I just hung up cause I felt stupid. I'm pretty sure that's what the detective was calling about and, yes, I could've just simply explained what had happened (that I got the wrong number), but I didn't want to have to get into a conversation of any sort with a police detective, especially when I really didn't know what his true motives were. I saw this as the intimidation that it most likely was and ignored it. I figured that if it were really that important then he would just call again (and I would just say that I didn't get the message or that I had just forgotten to call him back). In any case, the fact that he was calling from HER number, even though he had his own work number, was very suspicious. Plus... How do I know he wouldn't start talking about some other matter and try to engage me in some conversation I didn't want to take part in? What if he had some ulterior motive? What if he was trying to pin something on me by getting me to "open up"? I sensed a trap and I avoided it and I never heard from him again.

so if a detective calls it is mandatory to attend meeting?????

Nope. If they want a "mandatory meeting", they can arrest you. If they don't have enough evidence to make an arrest, it's not mandatory.

Here is what you must print, a miranda warning, and show to cops, then say: I want to talk to an attorney. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions. You have the right to have a lawyer with you during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you have the right to stop answering at any time. Other defense, parlez francais, to stop the dialog, and never talk to the police, they will use against you.
