I couldn't agree more. You HAVE to become business savvy even if you later delegate those responsibilities. I support Ari getting off of social media personally but unless she's retiring from music I think that's a mistake. I think she should have a staffer post on her behalf at least. The reach is too great.

It seems like musicians need a creativity hat and a business- savvy-hat, neither of which is easy to find.

Business savvy is a lot more important because many good artists can't monetize their work

Always allow an artist out of a contract, unless there is third party interference - Ala a manager, agent, producer, or record label trying to lure your artist away. If they want the equity out of the artist that you made famous, and developed - they need to buy you out ...and give you ongoing royalties. Further, they need to allow you to do at least 3 to 5 songs on said artist per album...for the remainder of the length of your original record contract with said artist. Why? If said artist blows up, say with an album enjoying millions in purchased units, you still get paid handsomely; even if your songs are not released as singles. BTW, if you demand such a deal - also demand a contract clause...which clearly states that you will always receive the first, second, and/or 3rd single release - per each generated album, until the contract lapses. Why? That keeps you in a kingmaker position, and will lower any chances that the label will try to suppress or sabotage your work. You might also require that a professional music video be made for your released singles (with a specific budget and quality controls), a lyrics video, and a required ad and promotional budget...carrying a predetermined cost. Said would include your ability to audit the books. All is designed to protect your interests, post artist buy-out. If you have an otherwise problematic artist, why fight with them...or fight to keep them? Some artists and their families, or lovers/husbands, are nuts. It's not worth it to keep them. Let them go! I recall a girl-group that I met, whom I will not name. Once their producers (and a shared manager) made them famous, every male in the business and every mobster (sometimes one and the same) wanted to 1) Sleep with them, and 2) They wanted to sign them (because they were the new "it girls"). Each suitor said, "We can do it better than your producers...that created your group, and made you famous. Sign with us instead, and leave them - we'll give you the world!" As soon as that girl-group got out of their contract and signed with these shadowy men...and their equally shadowy operations, who promised them the world - they instantly found themselves being victims of con men - one, after another; and they had to sue to get out of bad deals. It happens nearly every time - you can set your watch by it. To any singer or band...that is signed, as long as your label is releasing your albums - use them. Get as famous as you possibly can, and simply shut up and let your contract run out. Meanwhile - go to college, and learn the business - not just the entertainment business, but learn how to manage money and how to invest...such as in home, apartment, and business property rentals. I'll add to that, this bit of practical advice - study music, songwriting, arranging, and music production. Further...do movies, TV shows, reality shows, stage shows, books, or whatever else to promote yourself independently of your label. Next, after your contract runs its 2 year or 7 year limit - you are free. By staying with the label, in place of wasting your money in a lawsuit that a label can keep tied up in court for over 10 years (remember, they do have armies of lawyers on retainer) - you can instead, remain with them and build your brand. Understand, the label whom you sue...wants to exhaust and bankrupt you. That is their sole goal. Upon the lapse of the contract, you can start your own label and release your first album and music video on day 1 - and your audience will be there for you without interruption. Just record several albums of song material and shoot some videos in advance, get your logos, promo photos, and poster work ready - including copyrights and trademarks, and have your music/music videos/lyric videos ready for release. Sue a label, and they will simply hold you in your contract and release nothing for years - while your fanbase slowly erodes. The label will do everything they possibly can to sabotage your career, including blacklisting you, if you sue them. Don't allow them to know that you are the enemy, until they want to re-sign you...several months before the contract is up. Your tactic therein, should be to over-negotiate...so they can't re-sign you...even if they wanted to. Ask for something ridiculous, like a non-recoupable $20 million dollar advance per album. This is a nice way of saying, "We are getting a divorce - without saying it!" They'll simply say no to the dollar amount. By then, it will be too late for them to act against you - with full-force.

I read tommy matolas book and he basically said that michael's invisible album wasnt selling, they actually went way over budget and never recoupet, but michael didnt whamna hear it, he even fired his own manager and started to go on his famous sony is evil tirade, some artist once they realise their careers is plunging down they go hay wire and start pointing fingers at everyone but themselves like this chick is doing

Many people have said Tommy Matola is a horrible person…I will take both sides with a GRAIN of salt! MJ was also the one that owned 3/4 of Sonys catalog at the time.
@afritunez44222 ай бұрын
@zacharyknight2020 he probably was! But he is atleast honest about his flaws in the book compared 2 mj that was living in a bubble, owning 50% of sony pub dosent make up for the fact that ur career is tanking, he even talks about how mj had yes people all arround him all the time and the minute u would disagree or go against something he wanted he would fire u, and tommy seems more level headed

@ If “he probably was!” Then how could you believe anything he says in the book? I don’t trust either side let alone record executives or supposed pdf files. There’s always more to the story than just one book!
