Layer Parenting basics in Adobe Animate

Not working for you? My error was the fact that I didn't realize the PARENT had to be a symbol. The children don't necessary have to be. So for example, I needed to do a lipsync frame by frame, and I needed to make sure the head (the parent of the mouth) was a symbol. After that, the lipsyncs don't have to be symbols! So I was troubleshooting this and will save time for a future person! Hope this helps someone!

Thanks for the tutorial. Parenting doesn't work in html5 canvas (only works if you use AS3). In order to publish your end products to be viewed in all devices, you need html5 canvas and I am wondering if Adobe are working on it? Thanks again.

maybe I missed it but you animated within the symbol of the fish to animate? since im new I have questions hahaa why not animate outside of it? whats the difference? is parenting the same thing as grouping symbols and nesting them within each other?

It's possible to animate outside of the symbol. This is advantageous if you need to lipsync, for example, and your audio file is on the main stage. However, it creates quite a cluttered work evironment, and plus, you can copy and paste the full symbol in case you need multiple of the same fish.

Isn’t it an overkill? We used to use movie clips to achieve this kind of behaviour and using movie clips kept the stage way more organised

You can still put the entire rig inside a symbol after parenting if organization is an issue.

Although i do think it would be cool to have some of the files to kinda work along side with you, but by no means was that meant to be in anyway a comment to suggest you stop. in fact, i say keep going. you are doing great!!!

Are illustrator files (Drawn Character) can be moved into the Adobe Animate for animating easily and then moved into Aftereffects for final touches?

In animate, press file > import > Import to storage and choose your illustrator file. I'm not sure with the Aftereffects though.

this only showed parenting all the layers together and doing one tween to move it across the stage, it didnt show how to animate the individual fins and stuff?

Great! Except it's not supported under HTML5 or WebGL so... No longer useful I'm afraid. If you've spent the last hour wondering how to get the 'Parenting' button working, it won't unless you're in Flash (ActionScript) mode and since that's no longer supported it's not gonna work...

I found something a bit fishy. Many fish are fish 2:58 . A school of fish! Or, if you're keeping it simple, just fish. Unlike many other animals, the plural of fish can be "fish" unless you're talking about different species, in which case it becomes fishes.

I was looking for them too. It seems that they are inside the 2022 version of Animate. Which is version 22.0.2. When you start it up, there are tutorials that are within Animate that you can do and the files for this tutorial are in there.

Huh?... Hierarchy and parenting of instances is one of the main features from the beginning of Flash and now Adobe invented parenting again? Why? Nesting vector graphics is much easier or am I missing something?
