Don't agree with the comments on the video regarding their unplugged session ... they absolutely nailed it, yes it was rough around the edges in places but this helped give it the depth and vibe it had making it what it was . One of the best live albums of all time

Agreed , his voice to me did not sound weak at all in those songs. It was more subdued due to it being an acoustic setting, and yes he might not have had the same level of power as in earlier in career, but he still sounded amazing. Nutshell is one of my favourite performances from that set.

100%. I had to come to the comment section right after i heard this video say that the Unplugged session was lacking. It was heartbreakingly, hauntingly beautiful, with its own delicate quality. I would go as far to say that Nutshell from the Unplugged session is superior to the album version and I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way. Other than that, I enjoyed the video.

Yeah. But nobody's Unplugged touches Pearl Jam's performance of "Black." Eddie went to another galaxy by the end of the song & took the fans with him. AIC performance was awesome though. Had Soundgarden done one...they all would've taken a backseat to Chris Cornell's voice. He would've massacred Unplugged.

He did have the face of an innocent child. Seen the picture of Layne and Demri blowing bubbles makes me cry when I look at Laynes innocent face. The people that knew him say that he was very sweet and a gentleman. I really wish that drugs would have never touched his life. He would have gotten so many awards for his Amazing vocals and have had a lot of fun, I bet. I hope you fund peace and Demri wherever you are our dear Layne.

Without their pain, we wouldn't have their records. There's a point in certain mental illnesses where you just cannot push through anymore. Countenancing a tour through a depression burnout - well that may well have killed John Bonham and Avicii. Jerry Cantrell could probably relate, and is rightly applauded here, for his dignity and understanding.

Layne Staley is my Elvis & he can do no wrong. That said...I appreciate the “hard truth” in this video. I’m sure the painful disappointment (in himself) of letting everybody else down was a major factor in his isolation. I’m talking out of school here but I don’t think it’s too far a reach to believe that he felt responsible for killing the dreams of his 3 brothers...& that would be an unbearable load for anyone to carry. Whether that’s accurate or not..dznt matter. If that’s the way he saw it..it’s accurate to him. 💔 on this video...I’ve never heard anyone consider the perspective of the others & break it down this way. The guys are relevant..it’s their life, too. I appreciate the way you addressed that. It’s only fair. Well done.

Yeah I remember watching and you could still see glimpses of the great singer he was, and overall I thought he had a good performance. But when he would sing the S's I could hear the lisp and I think he had lost his top teeth by then but not his bottoms because you could see his bottoms when he sang but you could never see his tops. Thats a good thought but unfortunately if a person is coherent and denies help they cannot be taken to the hospital. This happened with my sister. She had been throwing up blood. Her husband called 911. The ambulance came but she denied being taken to the hospital so they could do nothing. This happened during the night. Her husband woke up some time later. She had stopped breathing for more than 20 minutes. They kept her body alive at the hospital till we all could say goodbye. We called her daughter who was out of state right after we found out her daughter couldn't make it to the hospital my sisters heart stopped. Mike couldn't help layne at that point his body was to far gone. I wish someone had told Mike there was nothing he could have done. When someone wNts to die you can't save them.

The whole thing with his Dad bothers me, he literally came back into Layne's life when Layne became successful with money. He used his own son for money and got high with him. I can see why Layne got worse into drugs, to be abandoned and used by his own Dad would make you wanna do some messed up shit, and depression on top of that. That's why when Alice brought Layne's dad onstage a few year's ago it pissed me off.

Two things... One, you did a good job of capturing the sadness of his last 6 years. Such a good job that I have tears running down my cheeks as I write this. I have never raised up a celebrity, they are no different than any of us and a lot are douchebags. Layne was just different, he was a special person who will always speak to my heart and soul. Nobody will ever make me feel the music the way Layne did. I challenge anyone who reads this to show me a performance that has half the emotional effect of Layne performing Love Hate Love live at the Moore Theater. Two, I disagree with your take on the AiC unplugged performance. Not only was it amazing, it absolutely shadowed the Nirvana performance and it's not even close. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either a Cobain fluffer or has lost their damn mind. P.S. His father is a piece of shit and he has zero remorse for the trauma he caused his son. I hope he suffers, I don't give a shit if that makes me a bad person. I'm not going to ignore the fact that Demri was the first to stick a needle in Layne's arm and followed that up with screwing his friends behind his back, breaking his heart. Layne was doomed, the two people he craved the love of were junkies who used him, abused him, and abandoned him over and over again. Call him a junkie loser all you want, but you don't get it. He was broken and did the only thing he could to ease that pain. I've been there, it's not a place I ever want to go back to.

@@cultureshock8435 I've checked out some more of your content since posting my last comment, you're very good at what you do. You have a knack for connecting with the viewers emotions when it comes to the subject of your videos, it's a rare quality on KZbin. Like I said above, I had tears after listening to you describe the last 6 years of Layne's life. With me being a Layne Staley nerd, I already knew everything you shared and then some on that time in his life and your take still got me in my emotions. It's a real talent man, keep it up. As for the unplugged, I've had this argument since the day after the AiC set originally aired on MTV. I was 18 back then and the vast majority of the people in my age range were so loyal to Nirvana they couldn't have a rational discussion when it came to comparing the two performances. I respect the fact that you listed your reasons in the video for why you rank Nirvana higher, including the reasons why you thought some of the AiC songs came up short. It's really a matter of taste, in my opinion. I don't care for covers and I didn't tune into Nirvana unplugged to watch Meat Puppet. I like their music along with every musician Kurt covered that night, but not when I'm watching Nirvana. I do realize that the majority of their catalog just wouldn't have worked in an acoustic setting, but that's kind of my point as to why I rank Alice above Nirvana. They had 2 EPs of acoustic material already, they were the one band that was made to kill an unplugged performance.. and they did! Finally, this has nothing to do with anything we're discussing, but it just popped into my head as I was writing. I was surprised you didn't mention Love Hate Love when you talked about Facelift. Maybe I'm just weird because it's always been in my top 3 Alice songs and others rather mention it.

I could feel the emotional energy in the way you sing and don't follow is my favorite song to sing cause I can connect with it in a deep way.i had a time in my life when the lyrics was what I was going through word for word. I don't know what you where going through in when you wrote it. Probably not what I went through but I found the pain made me sing it well thank you so much. I don't think it's right people only remember the struggle with drugs you had. Cause that's such a small part of the life you led. It doesn't tell me what kind of person you where. NO. Wrong assessment about the Unplugged album. It had a wonderful intimacy about it and the songs strongly stood alone in a very naked way when stripped down from the production and noise of previous versions of these songs. Rooster did have balls, and Would was a strong and steady but amped down version because of the setting, not because Staley's voice was lacking. You've got it wrong. Sure, he was struggling with his addiction, no doubt. But this performance was anything but weak or lackluster. It wasn't meant to be balls out, and it was haunting and beautiful in a simple way.

I don’t think it’s helpful to say that someone’s addiction is their fault and they should have been stronger or had the agency to stop. Every persons circumstance is very different. I’m a social worker and I work with addicts. So many are led there by trauma. Addiction is so complex, and is an incredibly difficult thing to overcome. Some people can do it yes, but I think it’s unfair to characterize someone who cant as weak. It’s like telling a suicidal person they were too weak to overcome their depression. Or telling someone with an eating disorder they are weak for succumbing to it. There are so many underlying reasons why it’s hard to beat. There is already so much shame and stigma attached to addiction that people should be mindful of the language used in the way we talk about people struggling with it. Not intended to disrespect, just my take on it. And Im not saying that there should be zero accountability; people are still responsible for how their actions impact others. I just think it’s reductionist to say that people are 100 percent to blame for their addiction without understanding the many underlying factors that trigger it.

Hey Agnes cheers for the feedback and glad you enjoyed the video! Yes you're right he was on the sofa, I think when I wrote that part I was trying to be a little symbolic rather than factual, and yes you're right Unplugged was not the last concert he did with the group, I believe in the video I said it was the last performance of real, real significance - studio or live. However I didn't know that his fiance died of a heart attack I read somewhere that it was a drug overdose so that's my bad! You seem to know your stuff about Alice and Layne. Yes, I have a great deal of admiration for him, I think he was the most talented rock vocalist who ever lived and it was such a tragic shame the way he died. I'll be making more videos on musicians and albums soon I hope you'll tune in to watch them. And Hungary is a beautiful country I've been to Budapest a few times :)

@@cultureshock8435 Demri didn't die of a heart attack. Though she did have a pig valve and pacemaker put in her heart in 1994, she passed away from a blood infection/bacterium. I've read unsubstantiated reports she passed from accute intoxication due to the combined effects of opiates, meprobamate and butalbital (which were an obvious precursor to her blood infection/bacterium). It was the bacterium that started her primary organ shut down and subsequent coma she never recovered from. Though he was not the Layne of old, AIC did play a few live shows opening for KISS in the middle of 1996. The last being the Kansas City show July 3rd.

Thank you for this. While I disagree with some of your points, I agree with others. Addiction IS a totally selfish endeavor, with a 25 year addiction, and then a 28 year recovery, I get to say that with all honesty. I get tired of the "poor addict, he isn't responsible" BS that is popular these days. Granted, once you start, it's like a runaway train but if/when you stop, you picking up again is s choice. Layne's mom said he'd been to rehab 13 times. He wasn't going to stop and he knew that. This ended the way it was supposed to...it is just sad that it was such a sweet, talented amazing person. 💗

you got some of it wrong though, Layne wasn't using heroin in his teen years. He started in 1991 a year after facelift came out, and he DEFINITELY wasn't clean when his Dad came back. He was deep into heroin by then. His father was not the cause of a relapse.

It was genius and daring to show two sides of a band in thoose days... and to be so professional and dark and beautiful and confident and different, but "no doubt extremely talanted and brilliant and to me it set the bar in music alittle higher.it gave me a lifelong respect and admiration for them.... not once in my life did I ever think they promoted drugs, unless your just a hater and can't read, then drop dead you self righteous troublemakers. this is a band ... that I wanna hear...."honesty for some is more important.....it can be more trusted with age like a fine wine....sorry not everyone such a winner like you...."whoever you are and arent"...huh. without a care for peoples ignorant comments."therapy" and "venting " through songs from life's harsh truths has been the same since song and dance was created... a higher plateau of self expression... from a band that laid out their dirty laundry not to be the cool band of the hour, some bands ( I won't name them exploited drug use just because they were posers at heart and wanted more "like" staying power"remember guys, the average Joe be like ... theese guys were top of music food chain but all that shit didn't make them feel albeit "better" atleast to me that they were "better than others as human beings, that's pretty humbling for A- list rock stars....."don't ya think?" they spilled their guts out....."I'd like to fly!.... but my wings have been so denied"..... some people really needed this band to say the things there many fans fealt!!... and maybe, just maybe, if you really think about it, having an endless supply of money on tap if you got any brains, or ever suffered from depression or addiction shouldn't be justification that "he had it all... and threw it all away".. money on tap, famous, no place to live in peace without public eye trying to exploit you for a cheap story especially during the worst times... just may really be bad for a sensitive band and especially Layne!... did ya ever think a that?.... or are you just mad that he had endless money..."and deserved every bit of it with a voice so deeply affecting" and honest?.... sometimes you got to "watch that mouth" ,and see through people's intentions. ... they say he threw it all a way.....well I challenge you to alaborate you saintly creatures of perfection... and another thing "he had it all and threw it all away" is a clique rock statement dude?... since us average saintly Joe's just can't think of anything original to say. And, ain't no way you can say these guys didn't mean every word they said "just to look cool"!!.. I think it takes balls to put out harder and harder rocking albums, then have the "sweet genius", audacity to throw ya a Phil Nekro knuckle curve ball little 7 song E.P..... that went #1.... to boot?..... "keeps creativity vibe and inspiration on its toes.....were it needs to be sometimes.Layne "obviously" wasn't glorifying satan for a cheap thrill all you zealots out there!!!.... people suffer from things that we may of never experienced or seen first hand, and Obviously to me and many.....many.....many top ranking bands and musicians, have a deep deep appreciation for.........."I think I'll take their word for it. Some people suffer things that we may never see or understand does not give us the right to belittle them...... especially "when their not around to out wit you" and maybe just put you in your place. I WOULD GIVE MY RIGHT NUT TO SUMMON LAYNE FROM BEYOND, and here his childlike laughter at a question like "Layne, what do you think of the genius people out there in a world were famous people don't need any talent no moe.... they just look like the "all American " and that alone make them legends... so once people see "popular opinion" in a world were your opinion......"ain't really yours no moe"... im sorry Layne, I got carried away......."back to the question"... what do you think of some people's deep and original thoughts on the chickenshit "clique" phrase that "you" ( Mr Layne)" had it "all"...... and just threw it all away????..... hey, and I gotta just say..... your sense of clothing style had a career coming all on its own man.... im 45 and I"still" wanna style like the late great Layne and company........"YOU WANT THE TRUTH!!!!!...... YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!😘

Tripod is still my favorite album period, not to mention my favorite alice record. Just incredible stuff man, their entire catalogue with staley was just something out of this world, and I can only imagine how much better their 3 post staley albums would have been had he gotten clean and survived. Regardless, its extremely tragic and just heart breaking. A young, phenomenaly talented man who could have been so happy, ended up destroying himself in the most miserable way imaginable. I'm truly sorry for all the pain and suffering Layne had to go through until his final departure, yet I cannot help but be grateful for his authentic free artistic spirit, that allowed him to reflect on his human anguish musically and share it with the rest of the world, so that perhaps it could be of some use; and personally for me, his music saved my life when I was at the lowest point imaginable. He's voice served as a light in the fog, helping to guide me back to the shores of life, by providing me with a cathartic outlet to process my grief and suffering when nothing else gave a semblence of solace. I am in a better place in my life now, but I still love AIC and Layne Staley, and I listen to his incredible voice almost on a daily basis. Really well made doco, honestly, you killed it in the end.

I love Layne. Always will & his voice was amazing. That being said? Out of the initial 4 grunge bands, nobody's voice could touch Chris Cornell. Period. The voice control & layered richeness of Chris' voice is hard to beat. He could sing circles around Layne. This isn't a diss. Prince is one of my favorite musicians & entertainers of all time. Michael Jackson isn't but I enjoyed his craft. Even though Prince is my favorite, I know damn well & can admit that while Prince is the superior musician...Michael Jackson was the better singer & dancer.

That's true. I've heard about kicking a man when he's down, but not kicking a man when he's dead. Still it's his opinion, and a very commonplace one too. Like many he'd just been carrying his cross way too long, and staggered under the weight of it. Imagine the pressure of a world tour, through depressive burnout. John Bonham and Avicii spring to mind.

Unless you’ve suffered the heinous addiction of opioids, you can never make claim to an addicts chosen path. It is the most horrible addiction to suffer. Layne knew it at the darkest level, he mostly accepted his fate. Tragic for so many. He was an amazing talent who could sing on another level. I’ll always listen to Alice In Chains.

Not a bad cover for Lane but he missed quite a few important things had a couple things wrong but all in all it wasn't too bad I guess he didn't put much emotion into it he left out a lot of things that were important to Staley per se and if it was about him they should have been included

And you're completely wrong about the unplugged the fact that he was dying he lost the love of his life when demry died he gave up if you were alive at the time you knew the rumors going around about him that were not true the fact that a man 6'3 when he was found we like 80 something pounds had no teeth and had leathery skin that was Gray the fact that he could go on that stage and belt out those notes as well as he did with such raw emotion shows you his love for what he does and as he opens his soul. Not to mention this is a true fact he often wrote about the assholes at his record label who called the shots you know I want the album finished in nine days blah blah blah or 7 days whatever they were sitting right in front of him when he sang the song which would be such factory the song he screwed up on many many times even though they only show up once in fact they had to actually let more people in the unplugged because so many famous musicians bought tickets to see the show there wasn't that many fans
