Do you have to collect your bags first before you go get your visa...Or will they be transferred to the next flight how does that work?

Here's a question. Did you have to get your checked bag before heading out into the city, or did it seamlessly transfer to your final leg and you could just take your carry ons/personal items with you?

TravellinTrev here! I did not have to pick them up. As long as you are staying with the same airline they'll transfer your checked bags to your next flight without you having to worry about it. I just had a backpack with me as a personal item, but if you have larger carry on luggage that you don't want to "sprint" with you can rent a storage locker for RMB15-40 for 4-10 hours. Amazing, probably I would try with my 5 hours layover. but you have 5 1/2 please let me know if it is possible. arrive at Pudong at 8:35 am and leave 13:30pm

I don't think I would have made it if I only had 5, it was that close. But I also had to deal with a really long line at the visa counter. If your visa line is short, I say go for it.

@@redkiwi2351 how long did you wait for your Visa? Someone told me just tell your airline at the airport that you're going to Shanghai. They will informed the authorities in advance of your arriving. And that should be much quicker. Is that right?

Do we need visa even if we only transit for 3 hours? How to apply the visa and is it free? I am about take flight Bangkok to Japan and transit in Shianghai PVG. Please let me know

Not sure customs will let you go out for suah a small layover

If you're only in Shanghai for three hours, you won't be able to leave the airport. You have to satisfy passport control that you will be able to leave within the permitted time frame. If you're only there for three hours, you will miss your flight if you try to go to Shanghai itself. If you're simply connecting at the airport, then you don't need a visa so long as you stay in the 'sterile zone'. That is, the departures zone in the airport.
