The Supreme Court today delivered a critical judgment on the rights of Muslim Women to Alimony ending decades of political debate around what has come to be known as the Shah Bano case. The Judges made it clear that a Muslim woman, just like any woman from any religion, can apply for maintenance under Section 125 of the CrPc. The court rejected an appeal by a Muslim man from Telangana who did not want to pay his divorced wife monthly alimony. Amid this big verdict, which will invariably open the doors for a new debate on a Uniform Civil Code, we speak to Hilal Ahmed, political researcher and scholar who has just published an important new book - A Brief History of the Present, Muslims in New India.

It's not the Muslims who are in a predicament. They are pretty clear about their priorities. And that is why the opposition has learnt that leaving Muslims where they are is the best policy. And BJP is learning that too...secular 'development' and 'progress' will not cut ice. Liberal Muslims are outcasts in their community. What solution do they have? Do they have the courage to work with their communitues? Will anybody listen to them? It's tragic and ironic that Mr Nasserudin Shah, the atheist, says that wearing the skull cap is the way Modi can please Muslims.Its high time the liberal Muslim owns up the problem within the community the same manner progressive Hindu families examine, evaluate and bring it out for dialogue in their families and communities.Laissez faire...that is what the Muslims wants. And that is what he gets from political parties.

I don't agree with Hindutva politics. However, colonial era Indologists have done a lot of harm to Indian history. Astronomical evidence (ancient Indians were experts in astronomy) indicates that Sanskrit was spoken in India during 6000 BC. Eurocentric historians erroneously project the Yamnaya (of Ukranian Steppe; 2000-3000 BC) are proto-Indo-European.. This European fanaticism is worse than Hindutva.

Hilal Ahmad wants Hindus to forget the brutal barbarism they were subjected to during Mughal/Muslim rule. He very well knows Hindus continue to revere their ancient roots and history thro yatras, Ram Lilas and Kumbh melas not to forget Pantanjali yoga. I advise him to take a stroll in Qutab minar complex before his next pontification.
