Dilshan! How similar is marathi and Sinhala/?

Good question. From the tiny little bit I have seen of Marathi, I so far notice that a) the words are not similar at all (so any Sri Lankan listening to Marathi will not even guess what was being said); b) Marathi uses gender specific nouns and verbs. Spoken Sinhala doesn't; c) The sentence structure however seems very similar. For example, "I want" in Sinhala literally translated is "to/for me, want", which I believe is the same in Marathi (for anyone reading this, please feel free to correct me). Does that answer your question a little bit?

Its because Marathi, konkani, divehi and sinhala all these languages are developed from Maharashtri prakrit language. But marathi, sinhala , divehi these languages are not mutually interchangeable. So Marathi and Sinhala are sister languages.

Can someone translate a word for me please? I was meditating one night when I heard the word ‘Lagola’ when I googled it, it said it’s a Marathi word (लगोल) but I can’t find a definition. What does the term mean? How does it translate to English? Thanks you!

I did not hear it from any person or any social media outlet. I was praying and meditating when I heard the word. I don't do yoga either, so if it's related, that would be weird. At any rate. I thought it was an odd word to hear and decided to google it. I used this video to ask for help because google said it was a Marathi word and I figured someone who made videos would know, or the people who followed him might know. I literally have no connection to that word in any way other than the night I heard it.

ashley James OK that's enough info. The closest word is _laagla_ लागला its first person past tense of verb _laagne_ लागणे. It has different meaning depending upon context. Another close word is _lagori_ लगोरी it's childrens outdoor game. And third strong possibility may be that it's not marathi word or you heard it differently.
