Concerning the guy in the back of the Doom cover: I always liked to think that the cover was done, then Romero was like "yo, Don, mindblowing artwork but only one guy? the game has multiplayer! the cover needs to say that!". Then Punchatz was like "oh shit!" and added that small dude who is also like "oh shit! I'm late!", barely making the deadline.

The "other guy" on the doom box art is actually the guy you play in doom, since your team was all killed. Mind blown.

Holy shit, The Dagger of Amon Ra, I remember watching this game be played when I was a kid. I could never find it again, many google searches of 'Egyptian point and clicks' but I couldn't find it, but here it is - I remember that scene with the dead dude in the sarcophagus very vividly for some reason. Thanks for helping me remember that one!

Something cool to notice about BLOOD's cover: Look at the blood at the very bottom of the hand trickling down, now look at the ShareWare cover. The ShareWare blood is the blood trickling down the hand of the actual game. It kind of supports that symbolism, pretty cool!

I miss the boxes :( They look so much better and unboxing them always felt special. The dvd cases of today are just boring. Even walking trough a game store isn't special anymore. All looks pretty much the same. Way to plastic as well. But I'm probably just old. As kid i could stand for hours at the game section in the toystore. Just looking at boxes. With the lack of internet and not having a subscription to a game magazine i bought games mostly based on the box art. It's what drawn me in. Loved the one from Tribes. Had this huge box with awesome art. Sadly we had no internet at home at that time so i bought a game i wasn't able to play, but my god what a awesome box that was!

Ever since I was able to buy my own games I've been a sucker for the box art. That was one of the reasons of BUYING it: just admiring the big box and the artwork on it, on the manual, sometimes designers even had eye for the inside of the box. When they moved away from big boxes in the early 2000s it felt .. 'meh'. I'm still a bit of a sucker for box art and other fancy artsie stuff that goes in it, but it has by far not the wow-factor as the old letter-sized boxes had.

My personal fave is the painting for the cover of STARFLIGHT 2. Back in the day my local computer store was selling posters of that cover art. Best $5.95 I spent that year (1989). I still have that poster on my wall today. The large format really allows you to see distant details not really visible on the box. Like in the middle background are some figures looking around with a flashlight or scanner. In the distant background there are some large vehicles, maybe construction or excavation machines. And perhaps best of all, up on the top hull of the ship itself, standing next to an obvious impact crater in the metal, some little figures checking and/or maybe repairing the damage. The number of 1 - 2 minute looks I've given that poster have to add up to a dozen hours over the years. Still fun games too. Thanks for all you do! Cheers!

If I had to pick up a favorite, that would definitely be Ultima V's cover by Denis Loubet. Here's a thingy about Wasteland cover - while ago, I've shown the artwork from it to my gf and asked "how do you think, why one can immediately tell, that it came out at the end of the eighties". Anyway, it's just beautiful and it saddens me, that I'll never have a poster of it on my wall.

It's been years since I bought a big-box PC game, and most of what I did own has been lost to time. YET, I still have the original shiny Deus Ex PC box from the 90's. It's still in good shape, too! (unlike the CD case the game sits in, stupid cardboard). It still has the all the stuffing that it came with, including the faux newspaper, the "Midnight Sun", folded neatly inside of it. It sits on my shelf, next to Alduin, and the smaller, but still awesome, Skyrim box, tucked in just below him. :D

You have an outstanding collection of games. I thought this was a great idea for a video and the idea of "Worst Box Art" could be pretty funny too. The Ultima and Myth games have some pretty cool box art and as a kid i used both to decorate the walls of my bedroom. THE CHAIR :D Also Acanum's Box Art was the reason I bought the game. I love the fact that Mike Arbua is on the original cover :D

My oldest son was a late talker as a little boy, and his first clear word was "DOOM!" -- apparently read off the cover art of the retail version of Doom, when he saw it in a mall computer-game store at the age of not-quite-3. His dad was so impressed at our son's sudden improvement in verbal skill that he bought the game that day, even though he normally didn't play 1st-person shooters. 20 years later, they still share a taste for a lot of the same PC games. ;)

I recall lusting after Wizardry in the stores. Yes I'm that old. Ah the world of computer gaming in the time where you had to go to book stores to buy computer games and computer stores were like automotive dealers where they had all their wares out on the floor so you could test drive them. It was a much different atmosphere than anything you can imagine today. My friends and I would go to the computer store and literally live there. I think the only reason the sales people and owner tolerated us is because they felt we'd help computer sales and the fact that there really wasn't anyone else in the store but us two kids and the sales people! LOL Man I loved that damn store, which was located in Conroe, TX. I eventually bought my first computer from them which was an Apple IIe with 128k of RAM, duo-disk drives and a Sanyo Color monitor. It cost me my savings, yes MY savings at just under 4K back in the early 80's. No idea what happened to that computer. My Mom prolly gave it away in some yard sale. Oh well she did hold onto my Vectrex! :)
