I believe most of the 'annoying' mechanics in this game were intentionally put there by the devs to get the player into a specific mindset. Games are too complacent these days, and the audience got used to get gratification from the most minimal of things, like instant fast travel or reloading a weapon. FC2, while not perfect, managed to inmerse me in it's world more than later entries in the series, because it was hostile towards me in the right amount.

Underrated gem, and probably still my favourite FarCry. It's one of the most bleak and hostile games I've ever played, and really establishes it's world. Later games polished it up but got too bloated, and following waypoints and checking off to-do lists just isn't as gripping as trying to read a map while driving a jeep off-road as machine gun fire bounces off trees and rocks around you. The gun degradation and malaria were one of my favourite parts as you were always paranoid and on your toes knowing that even the most perfectly-planned attack could go sideways at any second. Even though all the characters were randomly-assigned opportunistic assholes, I still felt more connection to them than anyone in the later games, and the Heart of Darkness storyline that they keep rehashing was at its most subtle and pure here. Even collecting gems was interesting because most of them had a unique scenario explaining why they were there. Later games relied too much on padding - it doesn't matter if there are a thousand things to do in a huge world if it all feels bland and grindy. Stop giving me meaningless Achievements and make me feel like I'm actually achieving something if that's going to be your focus. If this game allowed for ungrouped weapon selection and integrated mantling objects, climbing ropes and takedowns from the later games it'd be the peak of the series, but alas, those innovations were squandered on much less compelling settings. I enjoyed FC3 and Blood Dragon but FC4 was just way, way more of the same and turned me off of the series for good.

I think it's a little more realistic to fix a car by fondling its engine than by using a blowtorch to magically reinflate it's tires. Then again, it's easier to reincorporate the torch as a weapon than some random tool.

Great game. The only game in years to give me the feeling of living the role I was playing. I've still got part 3 sitting in my steam library, and hope it ends up as enjoyable as this one was.

I really feel like Far Cry 2 was meant to be something like STALKER, the mechanics just weren't implemented as well. You can see all the same mechanics, like the factions, weapon traders, open world with limited fast travel, lots of exploring a detailed atmospheric world, developing relationships with other characters, the side quests, even the weapon jamming and condition degradation, right down to the enemies all having crappy weapons! All the mechanics are there, I could go on with similarities for ever, the main difference is that the mechanics are far better implemented in STALKER. If you can imagine Far Cry 2's systems fully fleshed out, it would be an incredibly similar game, and a great one too.

If this game either had a fast travel system between towns or didn't have the malaria mechanic I'd have loved it. But the malaria thing just sucked and ruined the game for me. I hated having to stop what I was doing to go get more pills. If often meant driving for 5-10 minutes across the map, getting a mission from a priest, driving for 5-10 minutes, doing the mission, and then driving 5-10 minutes back to the priest to get your malaria pills.

It does have a fast travel system. It's not the best, but it does allow you to go to certain points on the map. If you look at the whole map, you'll see bus stations. They are your fast travel stations. And I do agree that the malaria mechanic was a little hindering to the game and annoying.

+JD Gregorio Fast travel is for plebs, also the malaria added a sense of urgency and it was pretty much dealt with if you thought ahead. Its miles ahead of farcry 3 and 4.

+JD Gregorio its also to bad that the game has zero stealth application. whats the point of giving me a suppressed mp5 and a machete if after i kill one guy all of his friend know where i m regardless of how much sound i make . far cry 3 maybe less realistic, but i dont play games for the sack of realism, i play games to get away from reality.

Hm... maybe malaria was patched, because I had to drive for pills like maybe 4 times in all playthrough. But enemy respawns were annoying, at least one time cleared town respawned while I was still in it, lol.

You have infinite supply of malaria pills when you are not progressing in main missions. For example you can go hunt for all the diamonds and scout all the outposts and clear all the camps without having to get more pills. Just so you know.

What actually made this game great was the amount of RESEARCH Ubisoft Montreal did during development to give a real authenticity to the environments, characters, and equipment you deal with. Not many people know in 2007 during development a team of devs from Ubisoft Montreal actually went to Africa, and traveled throughout Kenya on a camping safari documenting the terrain and wildlife; carrying out research for the game. FC2 really has some environments worthy of a National Geographic cover.

honestly i thought the weapon jamming added realism but it should only occur when your weapon is used to much or they could have done it like in fallout 3 where your weapon deteriorates over time and then it could jam

I have to disagree. It's far too frustrating a game to play. Far Cry 2 is frustrating, I'll certainly give you that, but I'll take respawning enemies that I can handle over the crack-shots that are FC1's enemies any day. And I wouldn't have too much of a problem if that game had quick-saves, which it doesn't. The game is loved because we remember what it was look to look at it for the first time. Far Cry 2 is just a better game, hands down.

Half-Life 2 was both a generational leap in story-telling and graphics. It doesn't compare. The first Far Cry had no story. It was about as fleshed-out as Quake. Guy in a Hawaiian shirt stuck on tropical island; must kill his way out. It was very broken and Crytek seemed to think the best way of fixing it was bringing back the things everyone despised: linear corridor sections, non-human enemies with ridiculous awareness, broken stealth and arguably an even more cheesy and cliched story.

I think the weapon jamming could have been ok, if you could fix your guns with some resources items do it with weapon marchants or other things. Also it came too quickly and too often.

There are couple of flash games. 'Cannibal Cuisine' where you serve up human meat to customers but I don't think you partake in any long pig yourself. And 'Resort to Cannibalism' where you're stranded on a raft and must kill and eat your friend before he kills and eats you. In actual games you can eat human flesh in Skyrim if you've got certain perks (what's with Bethesda and eating people?) while in Armed And Dangerous the heroes eat some human meat to survive.

The fact of the matter is, ever since Ubisoft Montreal got a hold of the Far Cry franchise, it's turned into a respectable series. FC2 was a massive step in the right direction and FC3 basically takes out everything everyone hated about FC2 and replaces it with more enjoyable side-quests & diversions from the main story missions. My point still stands: all Crytek are good for is game engines. They cannot make anything that will stand the test of time Crysis looks & plays horrible in hindsight

I'm sorry,but just as everybody else your only complaint is the respawning of the guards at those checkpoints.Yet U are so negative throughout your video, especially in the beginning.Played this with my buddy when it was just released and we thought it was awesome,with the day/night cycle and all,especially.Farcry3 is awesome too,but if you stand still,clouds do not move.Night comes in a second.No dawn.I love all FC games.I think in this vid your opinion was clouded by earlier mainstream opinion

Yes, that sucked balls! But in FC3 there are no enemies once you cleared all the outposts. Which is also kinda boring.

That is a problem, but was never a major problem for me. The major problem for me was you're constantly under attack for no explained reason. For instance, you can be driving and you get attacked by some rebels, so you stop and take them out. You get back in your vehicle drive for 10 seconds, and you get attacked again by more rebels. It makes the free roaming aspect of this game, the best part, such a drag.

Recently started replaying this, about half way through and this game is fantastic. Such a great game and alot better then the walking cutscene for games with qte's we get now. Wish Ubisoft was doing a hd remake of this with some fine tunning as opposed to far cry 3 classic.

There's also the Digital Devil Saga series for PS2, a duology of RPGs in the Shin Megami Tensei franchise with a linear story where you and your friends get chosen/blessed/cursed to turn into monstrous demons for your god's amusement and need to eat people to stay alive. :D

I'm not sure why but I remember when I played this game something about it just felt off. A lot of the game was really cool, but some parts felt disjointed, and some poorly explained. Like yeah every game you have to learn stuff, but in this game it feels more like you missed something you were supposed to already know and not just a new part being introduced.. if that makes sense...

That wasn't my only complaint by a long shot. There's also the annoying gun jamming, the malaria thing, the crappy fast travel system, the often "psychic" AI (though it's still better than FC1 I think), certain huge areas with nothing to do, the useless animals, etc. All that on top of the aggravating guard checkpoints. Despite all this, note that I still said I thought it was quite a good game in the video. But it's also quite flawed and could have been absolutely amazing instead of just good.

ya i like it to at short bursts at a time there respawn time should be a lot more then it is you can kill them all travel 20 ft turn around and they are back some thing that killed the "immersion" is they can shoot at you and not even be facing you the bullets make a 90degree turn out there guns

Not always, and it is hardly worth it to get hit several times doing so (I play on max difficulty) Then, it also ruins the whole immersion the rest of the time is trying to create. They should at least give a full day before respawns, not few minutes. It is pissing me off more, exactly because I like the game so much.

Yes,Phreakindee, there is. You can eat people in both Fallout 3 and New Vegas. New Vegas even lets you do a dine and dash. You still eat them, but take some flesh with you to enjoy later :) Yummy!

I was playing this recently and reminded why I stopped. You clear a check point go up the road get into a fire fight head back through the check point 5-10 min later and everyone is back. Can't they stay cleared for a little longer then that? really urgh.

I just watched Theme and Mechanics in Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 4, and I got to wonder how the hell did people think of this game as a playful sandbox fun time GTA game in First Person? The environments are unforgiving, weapons jam, you got malaria, cars get damaged, there isn't alot of fast travel, there really isnt' any checkpoints. It's a recipe for so methodical movement of actually being aware of your mortality, like Dark Souls. So how the hell do you see this as suppose to being a fun quirky game?

Yes there are games where you can eat people. The Fallout series, at least 3 and New Vegas. Also Vampire the masquerade bloodlines. The Bloodrayne series etc. I like Far Cry 2 very much, but the constant respawning of guard posts is sooo annoying I don't want to play the game more often. If they could at least increase the length between respawns that would be ok.
