Yeah, the mod community for this game is so good. Last dlc was made with help of the antibirth mod developers and basically transefered all content from the mod to the main game!

the tarnished characters do get their own versions of soul stones, called essences, unlocked the same way as the soul stones for the tainted characters are, the Essence of the Keeper turns stuff in the room gold, ie pick ups, trinkets, and items, and yes, they do work with clear rune

At 5:00 when you had the judgement? card your secret room actually did have an item to reroll (I think) since you had owned the wooden nickel before it became a pedestal item, you should've been able to reroll it and pick it up without it turning into money.
