Very fascinating, " oil canning" is like a canvas that is not stretched properly. A painting that is loose will not make a drum sound, and will sound frumpy. I am a painter, and I met you a couple weeks back, and you were kind enough to demonstrate the English wheel and the different beads. Thank you for your work, you are awesome!

For anyone that doesn't have an English Wheel, you can pre stretch your bead by lightly hammering along your intended bead line with a medium-high crown panel hammer

We used to place panel on a towel, on the bench and massage the high side bead down with a white nylon hammer, to reduce stress and relax the panel......takes most of it out. Love your work Lazze.

I don't have an English wheel yet, but I've recently discovered I can do the same pre-stretching with my bead roller. I use my largest round bead roller die on bottom (in my case 1/2") and I use a narrow flat die on top. The only reason for the narrow die is it's easier to follow layout lines. Any flat die would work. I run 3 or 4 passes applying a little more pressure each time. Works great.

That sounds like a great idea, and something I can use. Would it possible to do it AFTER I've rolled the beads?

Thanks for your videos. I wish I had all the great machines you have. I have been building race cars for years and been a welder and done sheetmetal. At 71 I will never have equipment like yours. I have worked mostly in Stainless fabricating U toppers and cone hoppers some with jackets. I use a brake and split rollers and hammers with a round bar to form the transition to tubing and of course a tip welder. I always wanted to learn how to use an English wheel to be able to build a car bodies. I use aluminum or fiberglass. Its been 5 or 6 years since I built a race car. The last one is a RX 7 that I built for me I made an air dam or spliter and a few parts for air flow to the carb. I wanted to go to your shop back when you were in back in Oakdale I live just up the road from there in Twain Harte. Keep up the great videos I love them.

I don't have an English Wheel but I do have a Harbor Freight planishing hammer and I used it to prestrech the panel before I rolled my beads and I got no warping or oil canning!!! You can check it out on my channel if you like!!! Thanks for all the lessons Lazze I watch all your videos and have learned a tremendous amount from you!!! Thanks Again and Keep Rocking it out!!!

I used my high crowned die wheel and tracked the circumference of the swage line stretching towards the inner part of the square. It seemed to work well. When bead rolling swages on a body panel like the swage on a door or floor panels.

I believe that the simple, 3/4-1" wide, straight beads found in the floor panels of more modern vehicles turn out better with some pre-stretching too, especially when they don't run to the edge of the panel.

Lazze l want to make steel resonaters guitars, l would very much appreciate, if you could show how to setup the bead roller, for rolling the edges to weld the sides to the top and bottom, that is to finish with a nice rolled edge on the contour of the guitar ., and how to English wheel the back to make a curved back with with flat edges. Cheers Tony b.

Nice video and I still really like your custom body hammer. Not nearly as attractive as the work you do, but I got to a point where I could fix OC pretty well with a torch/hammer. Never liked the wet rag/waffle faced hammer stuff but just a little heat (on the perimeter) and some planishing in the middle might work?

Lazze, silly question from an old bloke, who knows nothing practical about shaping other than being fascinated from watching many hundreds of hours on you tube etc. ... When you put this through the wheel, and rolled it, the stretch would have been in two dimensions. As the floor pan is presumably to be flat, why would you not put the rubber band on the upper wheel, so that the sample is only stretched in one dimension and not get a very shallow crown?
