If you make most of your money from what you do, you're working class. If you make most of your money from what you own, you're owning class. Landlord shouldn't dispute that they're not working people; they should be relieved we count them as people at all and not as what they truly are: leeches.

My wife is a landlord, jointly with her sibling. They own a property inherited. The tenants renting are quite happy with the contract they signed. The rent is cheaper than the average market prices and if there's any problem they have the authority to get that problem resolved providing they present any and all receipts. Trouble free renting. Why landlords can't show more concern in their investments other than the easy income is beyond me. Many landlords are takers. They work at exploiting their tenants.

Oh yes it's exhausting work, counting all that rent money, paid to pay the landlord's mortgages by people who wil never buy their own house because they are trapped into buying houses for other people !

We don't have a CGT in NZ, and you can make a lot of money from property. Over half of our wealth was untaxed.

Housing should be seen as a resource much like water, food etc. You can't just buy up all the water reducing availability, therefore raising the price of what is left. Then government's don't want to increase availability as it would then reduce/stop the increasing price due to demand and then act benevolent when you offer to make money off them for allowing them a basic necessity as if it was charitable - all whilst many delay repairs, allowing people and children to live in squalor and have the power to kick you out.

Hard task to define what working class people are. At glance I would just say manual jobs are different from intellectual jobs. Or white collars Vs brown collars. But if you have to work to put food on the table then you are a worker. Whilst if you live like a land owner or have assets then you don't need to go out every day to work.

Do you pay property taxes? You maintaining the property is work. If you've got tons of money and you put it in a bank to earn interest, and the money is huge enough to provide you with a decent income, is it working? Regardless, if you have an income from anything, I believe you are working. Some people break sweat every day to get an income while others just down and use brainpower to get the same income. You may come to call it a return on investment, but pushing a trailer with all your might is an investment of manpower that you expected returns
