Fellow socialist MP Diane Abbott has accused her party leader of being ‘in the pocket of millionaires’, amid a deepening row over donations and gifts to ministers.
Starmer, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and deputy PM Angela Rayner promised on Friday that they would no longer accept donations for clothing. It comes as Labour MPs head to the party conference in Liverpool, which begins on Sunday.
The backlash to the donations comes against the backdrop of the government attempting to position itself in contrast to the reputation of the previous Conservative administration.
It comes after it was revealed that the PM has received over £100,000 of gifts and hospitality since 2019.
Sir Keir came under fire after accepting work clothing donations worth £16,200, and multiple pairs of glasses, to the value of £2,485 from prominent Labour donor Lord Alli. But until Friday, the PM had continued to defend his actions.
It emerged that Ms Rayner has also accepted clothing donations worth around £2,200 from Lord Alli.
Ms Reeves admitted that she had accepted money for clothes on Friday too.
She has received around £7,500 for clothing since 2023 from a donor called Juliet Rosenfeld. The donations were registered as “support” for her office.

We seem to have governments that have no common sense , no real intellect , no charisma and no idea what the normal person in Britain wants , we don't want extremes, we want a government that looks after those that need it , that looks after the working person , that looks after the NHS, at this moment in time things like climate , foreign aid , immigration has to start being lower on the list , if we the people have less money from the government because there is none ,,common sense says money to elsewhere has to stop. You can't have your own people and your own country in poverty , and wasting money on climate,, foreign aid etc.... Anyone thinking different should put their name forward and be taxed even more, their money can then be put forward to those causes, if you are suffering poverty, and work 3 jobs , you don't want to see your tax money wasted. We need to be proud of being British , and proud that we can look after our own , and then when the country is back to being richer, we can then be proud to help others

He actually earns about £170,000, but the average salary of a Company CEO, is £4,270,000 pa, and he could be earning £2 million a year as a KC. A ticket to the VIP area at Arsenal costs between £600 and £2,300 per go. Assuming we can agree that it isn’t safe for our PM to sit in the stands, and we don’t want his wife standing next to her foreign counterparts looking like a poor relation, it isn’t that unreasonable. We expect to be paid at the going rate for the job, and not to be out of pocket over expenses. I don’t see why a Prime Minister should be any different. Starmer has saved the public purse by getting someone else to pay. Look past the headlines, and you will see that in the short time Labour has been in power, it has settled the public sector pay disputes, introduced the Renters Rights Bill, set targets for house building, and is reforming the planning system. Agreements have been made with several countries to return failed asylum seekers, and the rate of processing claims has stepped up, but these facts don’t sell papers. There is much more, but you can’t turn a failing state around overnight, and I will reserve my judgement until the end of the Parliament.

I am from London but when i retired after working approx. 70 hours a week i could not afford to stay there ,now 65 miles away . I still have an Arsenal season ticket and see Starmer becoming the biggest tightest, freeloading ponce in our history. Wish he would go and support Tottenham.

'Political judgement'. You mean how reprehensible things can be spun? Acting with integrity is such a waste of time, isn't it? Is Labour being primed to fail? It certainly looks like it. How long has Starmer been in politics? He doesn't know how it works, so he tells the country there's tough times ahead and then flaunts expensive 'gifts' for access to No 10. Is he really that naive? I very much doubt it. I wonder who it was that waited for a Labour government before freezing the elderly. Would it just be more 'acceptable' coming from Labour? The whole political system is rotten to the core.

John McDonnell needn't feel too smug about ONLY spending £400 on glasses from Boots. I haven't afforded to change mine for over 3 years now and can hardly see through them. And no prospect of getting any, any time soon. I shall probably end up having a trip and fall accident which will put me in hospital, so, so much for robbing me of my winter fuel payment. Not much of a saving with A&E full of the fallen and the frostbitten. At least McDonnell has a reasoned, traditional Labour ethos and isn't afraid to point out what a bunch of miserable wallies this government unfortunately is.
