I arrived home one day to find a message on my answerphone which was meant for someone else. It was saying that there was an opening for the mother to take her son for an operation the following day. I spent some time contacting the hospital to explain the situation and they thanked me because it allowed them to notify the correct person and avoid a no show in the operating theatre. Without my call the patient would have lost his place on the waiting list.

Years ago my grandma was having trouble hearing, her usual doctor said it was due to old age and there was nothing to be done. My poor grandma was very upset as her eyesight was poor and her greatest delight was chatting with family and friends. A while later a locum went to visit her after checking her ears he gave her instructions to loosen the wax in her ears so he could syringe them two weeks later. My grandma could hear again so don’t presume your usual doctor always knows best!
