I live in Los Angeles and it's honestly pretty infuriating knowing I will have to live through 4 years of this insanity again. I just helped a husband and wife who are clients of mine and a bit older to evacuate their home in this area and watching these a-holes politicize this and threaten to not provide federal aid to California for this and only being willing to do so with some strings attached (no idea what that actually means - probably in return for willingly helping their brutal immigration crackdown) is insanity.

@kojofour4328 There is a human element in that. Various levels of competence and experience. I have come across expert contradictions. I still have not seen an answer. On a climate science website, I came across an article detailing the hole in the ozone layer. It causes some extreme weather apparently by disruption of atmospheric air circulation. The lack of ozone creates insufficient heat inversion. There is more to it all explained if you look it up. They say it is not climate change related.

We not long ago had Cop Out 29 where far more deals were done for anything other than the environment. If China, USA, India and Russia don't sign up and implement serious reforms (by the way they are not going to as it's all about money and profits) then it will only make a tiny difference what the rest do. Look at the world tables on pollution and those for the developed countries they are all available online it's quite eye opening in how much the top 4 pollute. I came across a proverb which goes - "Societies grow stronger when old men plant trees, the shade of which they will never sit under". It's about taking care of and looking after the environment for future generations, unfortunately at this point in time that's not happening. Remember we can't exist without planet earth, but planet earth can without us. As Mark Twain observed a long time ago “Politicians and diapers must be changed often and for the same reason” How could Mark Twain have forecasted most politicians so well?

I use my petrol-fueled car less often, I don't iron all my clothes, I generally use less, and less often, fueled "comforts" such as hot water, fridge, lights. If "we" all did that ... lessened the burden on supplies, over time ... "we" could "buy time" for the "experts" to find and develop alternatives. This is not nebulous!

That wouldn't even scratch the surface. Big industries consumption absolutely dwarfs the general publics. Stop buying anything made in another country, anything made with plastic, anything new at all, any imported foods. Carve your furniture from fallen trees, weave your own wool, wicker baskets make a great replacement for shopping bags. Candles can be made from pig fat and beeswax and boycotting entertainment would save a huge amount of carbon. It costs a fortune to keep the lights on at LBC

I think the answer is higher taxes for ordinary people. Stop them wasting money on heating, water, transport, clothes and stuff like that. I would propose a pre tax based on what the government believes you will spend rather than your actual spend, this will create a "climate buffer" that we can use to ensure our politicians are getting a fair wage for having to make these tough decisions. I would also be in favour of government subsidies for James O'Brien. He is only on £365,000 year at most and for a millionaire man of the people thats really not that much at all. I'm donating all my carbon credits to James this year and welcoming the long, dark winter nights as a time to reflect on my past consumption.

In ordre to fix it, we will have to make a civilisation change in a very short time. If it does not happen we will ultimately face de desintegration of society and chaos.

I do have to say that perhaps the UK in general should stop obsessing about the US. Just looking at the BBC news KZbin page and 8 out of the last 10 uploaded videos are about US topics. Even the LA fires, as bad as they are, are like watching a reality soap... Natural disasters like that happen all over the world all the time unfortunately. And most of them are much worse and get only a fraction of the attention. And yes, global warming is a much broader topic, sure, but I would like to see the UK worry more about the consequenses of that for places like Bangladesh, its former colony, where many millions are at risk, rather than some millionaire celebrities over in the LA hills. So sure, the US is an important country, but to see it dominate UK news like it does today, is just very awkward.

so, for the question of what you can do if you were king of the world. you loosen some of the ridiculous hurdles for nuclear power and immediately start construction on nuclear power plants. this lets you phase out coal and replace it with nuclear. build out more solar and hydro and tidal power. you put a carbon tax on the point of extraction. subsidies to help people make their homes more efficient (aka more efficient windows). change the laws for cars, so giant cars are no longer allowed. the only trucks allowed are work trucks to be made. do japanese style smaller trucks for farmers etc. only semi trucks are allowed for transport not personal use. the giant american pick up trucks being gotten rid of would drop the co2 emissions overnight by 5%. a wealth tax to fund a lot of this. billionaires have profitted off this excess for centuries. edit: the biggest thing is the carbon tax at point of extraction. this will indeed make things much more expensive, but it will also mean that only essential things that use fossil fuels will be left viable. edit edit: also it would only work if you wer eking of the WORLD not just a few countries. climate change is a global problem and it requires the entire globe doing what's needed. the lions share of what needs to be done is gonna have to come from the western countries along with china, india, and russia.

Nuclear power? Fission power stations do have accidents, and we're still living with the consequences of Chernobyl. Wind, wave, solar power and the quest for fusion would be a much better investment. Vehicle emissions are an obvious issue, but what about the co2 released by cement production? Global warming is also accelerated vastly more by methane from agriculture than co2 emissions, another thing we gloss over.

I'd say the government should invest in cooperative type companies in which every member is an equal shareholder. Therefore the profits the companies do make are used by the company to pay for staff wages / improvements (any income made would return to the members as equal bonus for paying into the company, or to pay back government for the loan for setting up companies (in this case they would basically be business partners with government)). Subsidies will only be paid out to these types of companies (if they are utility companies or have a societal benefit but not particularly lucrative companies) and if they are doing bad then the government will intervine to review, but they will be independent, which would reduce the amount of government bloat/bureaucracy and mean the companies would be run by the experts in their fields.

But this is exactly why governments need to take action! No matter how much people aspire to a more sustainable lifestyle , it won’t really happen when the system continues to allow it.

Resictict car use is an immediate measure, but there'd be such an outcry about even especially this! I speak as someone who has never owned a car, but it seems to me there is some hypocrisy if you drive a car and protest at climate change though I hate being self righteous. I don't want to ban cars, which would be unrealistic but some reduction, and encourage meant to cycle, would Public transport could need to be much improved and receive investment, of course. At present there's now much talk as well as Right wing denial it's hard not to feel very pessimistic - more money for the rich over survival of humanity, seems to be the prevailing ideology!

FYI - On Jan 13, Times Radio had on an "expert" who blamed "wasted" spending on trains & public transportation and argued that political incompetence is preventing a vast expansion of "autonomous vehicles" and spending on roads. The expert also suggested that all vegetation in the hills above LA be destroyed every year.

Start building self sufficient sustainable homes. I can only think of one reason this isn't mandated! Mass production of the components to enable this to happen would make it affordable / standard and remove the necessity to be drawing on largely carbon burnt energy. But then who'd profit from that?.... not the energy big boys... thats for certain.
