Yes, I remember the safety pin dress. Who could forget👀! ? At the time I thought that it looked great on her, that it could never have been worn to anything except a film premiere, and that it certainly made Liz Hurley into a recognisable name, instead of a vaguely recognisable actress who played character parts competently. With hindsight, is this a classic case of the dress being the star and towing the actress into recognition? That remark is not meant to be bitchy - I just cannot think of a better way of expressing it.

The other thing Cher was trying to show is that initially nobody thought Cher was a “ serious actress”. Yes, she did a great job in Mask, but most people thought that was beginners luck. By the time Cher wore this dress, she had won the academy award for Moonstruck, and she was giving the middle finger to all people who thought a “ serious actress” wouldn’t wear something outrageous for attention. Now people forget that intially people laughed at Cher for thinking she could act in movies. I remember being entranced by the Liz Hurley dress with the safety pins holding it up. It seemed suspended in air, but yet technically if you measure the amount of skin showing, an inch on the side, it really wasn’t that much. However it was obvious she wasn’t wearing underwear , and that’s what made it eye popping.

I totally agree! The original movie Sabrina remains even today as one of my favorite movies along with Breakfast at Tiffany's! I've watched both of those movies at least 5 times if not more. I realize I am putting my age out there but who cares😂 I am pretty certain that younger generations would not enjoy these films, but the gorgeous fashions in both films cannot be denied!! AWESOME VIDEO ONCE AGAIN! THANK YOU BEEBS❤ BRAVO TO LBD!!!!!

Thank you Beebs. I love the one designer coverage idea. This reminded me of my gran, bless her. She was born in 1903. The adults around her then, born in the Victorian era, never really lived to a ripe old age. Back then, it was expected that you wore black, in mourning, for FIVE YEARS after someone died! Wearing black for mourning dates back to the Roman Empire . Citizens there would mark a person's death by switching their normally white toga for a black one. Now, imagine, you spend 4 years in mourning, then someone else dies. Another 5 years added, then another person dies. Another five years added. My gran was in her mid twenties and had never worn anything but black her entire life. One day, she had a hissy fit and threw all her black clothes away. Which would have been her entire wardrobe. She swore she would never wear black again and she never did. For 60 years. We were all barred from wearing it too in her company. One day I went to visit her, on my way back from work She lived in a room in a nursing home. I walked in and she promptly threw me out. I had a black skirt on! "Go home and get changed! Then you can come back!" I did to. 😄 She wouldn't even talk to me unless I got changed. Beebs, I would love to see you cover Edith Head's designs. I just adore what she designed for Grace Kelly, who was stunning. Her blue dress in To Catch a Thief is just gorgeous. I love that era. Women looked like women. The close fitting, figure skimming designs were just divine. Also Jenny Packham, who Catherine, Princess of Wales wears a lot, can do no wrong in my eyes. :)

I am also old enough to tell you watching the Oscars in my jammies in the '70's Cher loved pushing the envelope long before the black one. Bob Mackie made many of them. She always looked amazing to me. Even my Grama loved her dresses, on her. That is part of Cher's secret. She knows her body and conveys her personality and message so well it's perfection. Little trivia Bob Mackie started as costume designer on the Carol Burnett show. Though I didn't buy any he used to sell on QVC or the other channel. Ladies bought his stuff like hot cakes.

The other thing about Cher that year was that she WAS enacting the middle finger at the Academy - for the Mask thing, but there's a set of nuances. At the time, Cher was working hard at coming out of the shadow of Sonny some, instead of being the iconic single syllable powerhouse talent she's now seen to be. At the time, she was best known as a 2nd billed (behind her husband, and sort of part of his gig) on a weekly TV variety show. Yes, she'd belted out some great songs and was sort of known for it, but her niche was very much not actress, not film (TV was a whole separate - lower - category), not even star as a singer. She got ignored for Mask BECAUSE she was Cher, and she was not having it. She had a history of showing up in shocking garb nobody else would dare kind of all around the industry, but again, she was still part of a separate entity in most minds, and very few had stepped back to see her for what she really could do and recognize her for the diva she is now known to be. By Mask, she'd done Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, which pretty much sank without a bubble, and Silkwood, which did not but got only gape-mouthed astonishment at the notion that she could Act (those 2 were released back-to-back in the early 80s). Then she waited to let the idea settle for everyone for a year or two, and she kicked it off the curb with Mask. I guess she was just tired of being patient at that point.

One thing worth noting: there’s a difference between wearing “defiance” clothing when representing yourself, versus when you are representing an organization. That’s why I did (and still do) side-eye so many of Mendacious Meghan’s fashion choices; you just can’t dress like that while representing the monarch or your business/charitable entity without saying something ugly.

The monarchy isn't celebrity and that is why yacht girl was OUT of her element. She longed to be celebrity but didn't have the chops to make it in that arena. Sadly she is OUTCLASSED in the monarchy as she is more the yacht girl escort mentality. She was IRATE that she wasn't getting PAID to be the part, as she would be as the former. That is doing what the client wants. The monarchy isn't pleasing the public so much as promoting their institution and country, which is OUT of MM as she lives to promote ONLY herself. Out of her scope to adapt from that behavior. She is all about her. NOT traditions, history, class or country. Basically just gauche.

I see a direct comparison between the Rhianna 'maternity dress' and the Lady Gaga dress. Born in the early 1950s, both outfits resonate with me as what used to be called negligees by my mother and women of that time. The interesting difference in these 2 modern takes is that Rhianna's looks like she forgot to change out of her revealing night wear before heading out the door, whereas Lady Gaga's outfit looks to be an intentional design, paying homage to the romantic/erotic lingerie of trysts and sexy date nights in a time gone by. Gaga's outfit works where Rhianna's unfortunately looks more like an embarrassing oversight akin to accidentally leaving home for your important business meeting still wearing your fuzzy teddy bear house slippers. A interesting juxtaposition nonetheless.

Oh I really loved this episode! The little black dress has been my favorite wardrobe piece since I was 17. I bought her for my senior homecoming dance with my own money from my part time job. It was a classic eighties dress, with a bustier top with a ruffle over one shoulder, a peplum waist , a just above the knee hemline and a moderate back slit. All in a heavy weight matte finish satin. I felt like I belonged on Dynasty in that dress I wore simple black stilettos that I got on sale and a matching clutch. I felt so grown up. It was such a lucky find and cost way less than it would have normally, but was slightly damaged and my mother helped me fix it even though my parents felt it was too mature for me. I wish I had kept that dress, it wouldn’t fit me anymore but it was so beautiful.

Cher and Liz Hurley, it was another time. Dressing up was fun and daring. People were more relaxed about finger pointing. They were shocking but we all laughed and moved on.

I got my 1st LBD when I was 3 years old. My younger sister and I got matching dresses, in black velvet, for a photo in 1957. Wish there would have been color photos back then.

That dress Cher wore when she won the Oscar for Best Actress for Moonstruck. It was not an outrageous design for her. She always wore this type of dress by Bob Mackie.

Looked great. Also, it came from a time when stylists weren't so ubiquitous, like Diana's dress, we knew she chose it. Red carpets were a fashion statement of the person. It was an era where we made the fashion. We transformed our clothes (I made most of mine)

Very interesting topic Beebs! So many amazing insights you gave us. Thanks I think the color was an ironic twist we can see now; of Diana, former princess of wales trying to go forward with her life but she had no future…. Cher did get her Oscar and proved her point with that black costume!

I remember the Cher dress. I also believe it was an absolute clap back for a suggested dress code for the Oscars. I loved it at the time. It was funny.

Cher has always worn clothes that show iff her midriff! She wore these types of costumes on her TV show so this was nothing new for her at the time.

You are probably too young to remember the “Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour” on TV from 1971-1974, the couple went on to do “The Sonny and Cher Show” and “Cher”-her own show after their divorce till 1977. She wore Bob Mackey Vegas style, beaded, sexy dresses throughout the shows. Her dresses at the Oscars were pretty normal for Cher and no one I knew thought it was outrageous at the time. It was Cher!❤ (The headdress was a little over the top, but she is part Native American.🥰)

I would absolutely love to see a series of individual designer videos, especially if able to show some of the same or similar outfits on different celebrities or models. We all have faves in the couture universe (past and present) but liked or not most have had some major, and often long lasting, impact on the fashion world. Such a series would make a fascinating history of fashion. I sure hope there is enough interest to make it worth your while.

Cher didn't get nominated for Mask? Have you ever seen that, or a part of it? Cher deserves to wear whatever revenge dress she wants if they didn't nominate her for that.

My little black dress moment was in my early 20s when I wore a long-sleeved black sequined dress to the company's stuffy hotel holiday party. Looked perfectly respectable from the front but was completely backless to the waist. Caused quite a stir! At the time it was the most expensive dress I'd ever purchased....around $400. Fun memory! Of course I still have it. I think I *might* get one thigh into now. 😂

I remember when Liz wore the Versace dress, everyone loved it. Diana’s LBD was dubbed “the revenge dress.” Camilla wore a strapless black dress & a choker like Diana’s a little while later, but it didn’t fit her well & people made fun of her for it
