The Spectacular History of the New Jersey Shore

Күн бұрын

Long Beach Island is an 18-mile long barrier island along the central coast of New Jersey. Originally called Long Beach by the early settlers, it gained the title from its sprawling coastline and long stretches of white sand beach.
In the 1700s, whalers used the area for their whaling operations, and farmers grazed their cattle on Long Beach and nearby Tucker's Island, to the south. In the 1800s, local fishermen were building shanties on the island, making their living fishing, clamming, and raising oysters. They called themselves the Baymen.
In the early 1800s, shipwrecks had become so frequent off the coast of Barnegat Inlet, that a lighthouse was built in 1834. Replaced with a new one in 1859, "Old Barney" still stands today, the 2nd tallest lighthouse in the United States.
By 1850, visiting sportsmen were coming here to hunt and fish. Wealthy Philadelphians began building large beach houses in an area known as Beach Haven, along with elegant hotels like The Parry House and The Engleside. In 1886, a railroad trestle was built across the bay, carrying passengers to new destinations like, Peahala, Brant Beach, and Spray Beach. The tiny community of Ship Bottom became known as "The Gateway to Long Beach", when a bridge was built to the island in 1914.
In 1944, a powerful hurricane devastated the island, lifting hundreds of vacation cottages off of their foundations and carrying them away. The newly built Garden State Parkway linked LBI to Manahawkin in 1954, and in 1956 a newly constructed causeway began bringing even more visitors and homebuyers. In 1962, another powerful storm tore through the island, causing it to split apart in several places.
In 1985, the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge opened at the south end of the island. Offering a totally relaxed atmosphere, LBI continues to be one of the most laid-back family-friendly resorts on the Jersey Shore.

This is great! We own the Ship Bottom life saving station which officially worked from 1871. We love it! Some believe there are still ghosts in the house!😊

Thank you, Elizabeth!. That is so cool! I've never been there so I just looked it up. Do you live there? Maybe the Mansion House ghost moved into your life-saving station? 😄👻

My parents started renting places on L.B.I. in the '50s for a week or two each summer. We fell under the Island's spell and bought a mobile home in the trailer park after the '62 Great March Storm. Holgate then was heaven. Surfing,sailing, water skiing, surf fishing and shelling. They sold it after a few years and bought a small house on Mallard Island, in Manahawkin.Judy Mershon and I would walk across the bridge carrying my surfboard on the days mom would be out running errands. Parents divorced and I moved to Miami 'til '92's Hurricane Andrew. Dad sold the place in Sept. 2001. Still my favorite place in the world.

Wow that was a fun little story of your adventures in LBI, Joan. Holgate must have been great back then. And Mallard Island looks like a nice place. That's so funny that you carried your surfboard across the bridge with your friend. 😊 That's a long walk! I had a girlfriend that did that with her surfboard in Sea Girt. Thanks for sharing your memories! 🙂🌊

Great video! My family and I lived on Staten Island and spent every summer on LBI. My parents rented the same house every year, which was on 24th St. & Bayview Ave. in Barnegat Light. Great memories!

This is "Part 9" of which series?
@historyofthejerseyshore
@historyofthejerseyshore 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carolyn. This video is "Part 9" in a chronological history that begins with "Part 1: The First Visitors", and ends with "Part 25: Restoring the Shore - The Recovery. The channel is also divided into four subsections...Parts 1 -4: The Very Beginnings, Parts 5-8: The Early Resorts, Parts 9-13: Five New Resorts Begin to Grow, Parts 14-25: The 20th and 21st Century. Not all of the videos are posted yet, but they will be soon. There is also a section "Chapters I - III" from North to South. These 3 chapters cover every shore town from North to South and are divided by counties. These chapters have all been uploaded. There are also some "short clips" that I've cut from the entire movie. Thanks for your interest in the video!
