Coming from a country that works with metric units only seeing you describe how the lb is calculated is just insanity. The ability to have a standard size for things makes the maths easier & you then know exactly what thickness of paper/cardstock you are getting every time. I will also use a Hot Press 210gsm cotton blend watercolour paper in my Laser Printer for colouring or watercolouring. Thank you for all the hard work that you’ve put into this.

yeah american here but a scientist that uses metric- mass =/= weight. use the mass! (gsm)
@coolrunnings314 күн бұрын
Indeed, grams per square meter. Simple
@krys646113 күн бұрын
The lb calculation here isn't vs metric. We could translate it to metric and the standard they're using to get it would still be the same: weight. It's also not quite as crazy as it seems because paper was first mass produced for books.
@suechristian579013 күн бұрын
@@krys6461 I was meaning that when you first showed 3 different thicknesses of paper/cardstock that were all allegedly the same weight in lb. That was confusing & doesn’t happen here, as per your wonderful explanation to each piece being compared as an “apple to an apple to an apple”. That was all.

I knew (or was pretty sure) that gsm is how you actually know how thick a paper is. Thanks for confirming!!

Wow, this was an eye-opening video! Thank you for the explanation. Those miniature versions really helped to visualize things, too! And oh my gosh, sweet little Rose working so hard to make her bed nest just right was too cute!! So was her adorable yawn at the end, hehe. 🥰🥰🥰

Oh, thank you! When I first started buying specific kinds of paper for different projects, I learned about gsm measurements but never about the other, although I could see it on some of the packaging. Most store clerks these days don't know anything about the products they sell, so until your video popped onto my screen just now, I have had no idea what those pound numbers meant! The only thing I ever had to remember was, "twenty pound bond," for my printer. No idea what it meant until now! Another of life's little mysteries solved. Bless your heart! 🥰

This is really excellent. Here in the UK we have the gsm system. I had no idea that there was so much confusion involved with the US pounds system, and you've made this very clear. I am printing off your paper guide. I have recently wanted to put decent art paper through my HP laserjet printer and it is good to know what is printer-friendly and what is not. Thanks for such a clear summary of the different papers and what you can use them for. So helpful!

I almost didn’t watch this video because I thought I understood paper. Boy was I wrong. I never noticed that the gsm could be different on various types of paper with the same poundage. I never paid any attention to the gsm. Now I understand how important it is. Thank you so much for this video, it was very informative.

So if you hold a paperback book and hardcover book of the same edition of the same book this all suddenly makes more sense. They contain the same book content with different paper, so they are the same from the parent perspective. Mass produced paper was first for books, hence "text," "index," and "cover."

I think at this point, the lb weight is more used for shipping calculations of the signature size... much easier to determine pallet weight by just counting the number of signature packs on a pallet... but when the lb weight started... weren't all signature sheets the same size??? at least that's what I was taught in my graphic design program 20 years ago. I have recently been flustered by the various thicknesses at the same "weight", so thank you for this video. Been trying to find the tracing paper I grew up with, the new stuff is all thicker than my memory and feels almost plasticized
