Not a day goes by i dont think of my best friend Jamie who i lost close to 10 years ago when we were in high school today . he killed himself one night because of complications with a medication . i woke up the next morning to my mother screaming into the telephone . i always shudder when a phone rings in the morning because of that moment they called to tell me he was gone . he really was my best friend, and someone great . I had a dream about him the other night, we were adults, he was my age, i am now 24. i wonder what he would be like, now . anyway, this song caught me in that feeling . i think about him everyday and now i have a song to remind me even more of his lasting memory . thanks -- nicholas .

The lyrics are raw, honest feelings and thoughts, as we've all had, after the end of a romantic relationship. Yet, life must go on. We enter into new relationships, but the past is never quite forgotten. Nor should it be. We all have 'pasts'.... patchworks of prior relationships...some that were stronger than others... regrets in some instances... the right decision to end in others... Only an immature person would 'demand' that their current partner cut off all ties with former loves. No man is an island, or just a 'table for two'. ;-) Life and relationships are complicated, yet, beautiful, even with heartache in the equation.
@P-diddykong6 жыл бұрын
@@Lisa_Evers this is about the death of his therapist. "You're smaller than my wife remembered" pretty much excludes the idea of this song being about the end of a romantic relationship. A lot of other indicators show that this song is about death but I think the line I cited shows it pretty well on its own

I don't make 'top lists' of bands/songs (because it's pointless and I'm not a character in High Fidelity) but I know that if I was to, this song would be somewhere very high up on such a list. It's fun, sad, beautiful, suspenseful, and magical all at the same time: a masterpiece. I'm so grateful that there are talented musicians and creators alive that can produce such amazing music which evokes myriad of emotions and feelings. I hope everyone reading this is having a good day, but if you're not, I hope this song can give you 6 minutes of respite.

Such a special song, the bass melody had a downward trend, kind of represents life and a continuous downward spiral until death. But laid on top of that is the xylophone which follows the vocal melody and is quite positive. Then you have the happy synth melody, like the thoughts we have everyday about life and our ability to stay positive even though we all die and have to endure suffering and hardship. So many emotions in the lyrics, talking about priorities in everyday life, things to do, the relentless work, and then in the end it makes you think if it was all for anything. You can learn a lot by mourning someones loss.

I've seen that anyone has posted the lyrics yet. there it go: I wish that we could talk about it But there, that's the problem With someone new I couldn't start it Too late, for beginnings The little things that made me nervous Are gone, in a moment I miss the way we used to argue Locked, in your basement I wake up and the phone is ringing Surprised, as it's early And that should be the perfect warning That something's a problem To tell the truth I saw it coming The way you were breathing But nothing can prepare you for it The voice on the other end The worst is all the lovely weather I'm stunned, it's not raining The coffee isn't even bitter Because, what's the difference? There's all the work that needs to be done It's late, for revision There's all the time and all the planning And songs, to be finished And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming Till the day it stops And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming Till the day it stops And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming Till the day it stops I wish that we could talk about it But there, that's the problem With someone new I could have started Too late for beginnings You're smaller than my wife imagined Surprised, you were human There shouldn't be this ring of silence But what are the options? When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone We're safe, for the moment Saved for the moment

I think I have been to the places in the video when I was in Stockholm. Funny enough this has appeared in my recommended as I’m listening to lcd in a wave of nostalgia for the months I spent in Sweden some years ago. Back then I listened to This is Happening in loop bc it sounded as estranged as I was. I had a peak of happiness on a sunny day while I was visiting Stockholm alone. I spent the entire morning on some rocks in Hornstull that looked exactly like the ones in this video, looking at the view on the city hall on the other side of the river and talking online with the girl I liked who was back in mother country and trying not to fall asleep bc I had spent the night in a crappy hostel nearby. I then proceeded to walk on probably the same bridge as this guy, getting lost on the way to the suburbs and feeling like the best was ahead of me. Which might have been a foolish feeling

It doesn't matter what exactly it's about. It's about loss in general--that's all that matters. Personally I think it's about his wife's still born child, based on the lines, "You're smaller than my wife imagined/ surprised you were human." and the fact that Murphy promised his wife he wouldn't tell the world what it's about.
