I had an exchange on Reddit with someone who claimed (quite convincingly) that he was in the original design team. There are no FPGAs on that board. According to him those chips are ASICs . The purpose of the gold was to prevent corrosion during long term storage, not radiation hardening. Operating in a nuclear contaminated environment was never a requirement for the Jav. Yes, the sensor is a gyro. Beware, it has some pretty toxic chemicals in it. Maybe too late, since you have probably already opened it. Reverse engineering machine code is not that difficult. There are many tools for this. You can't arrive at the original source, but you can absolutely understand structure and algorithms based on statistical methods. That said, micros with internal flash would have their JTAG fuses burnt so you can't read anything out. As you noticed, there's no external flash or EEPROM because they would be difficult to protect, so they probably opted for one-time download of everything from the CLU to the missile. This could happen during the initial cooling of the seeker, which took about 3 minutes in the old models like yours. The Jav is a relatively slow missile by design and does not require that much power for steering (unlike the TOW). These op amps are used on a variety of platforms for this exact purpose. It's their main "raison d'etre". And, finally, Russia, China and Iran likely already know everything they need to know about the Javelin. They have dedicated teams for reverse engineering US weapons that fall in their hands, just like we reverse engineer Russian, Chinese and Iranian systems that happen to fall in our hands. We brought a captured Russian "Krashuka" EW system from Ukraine a year ago for "market research" 😁

yep big VLSI chips are ASICs (VLSI was a big player in pre-FPGA asics). No code or flash needed, everything is in the metal layer(s) which interconnect standard cells.

The answer on sensitive information makes sense. I've trained and used the javelin system during my time in the Army. The CLU was secured with other unit secret equipment, but the missile assembly was handled like any other explosive. You're probably correct about the CLU upload prior to launch, but I remember it happening very quickly and the CLU switching over to the missile's computer for final input. That was perhaps the most interesting tear down I've seen yet.

Without knowing French law, I highly doubt he will have any issues with showing this information but there's nothing stopping a government from claiming that showing this could cause military harm. Then you have to defend yourself in court, which in the USA, sucks even if you win your case! If anything, he might get a takedown demand letter. I just couldn't see prosecutors wasting their time on obsolete tech.

Your English is excellent for a non-native speaker, and is better than many native speakers. Not having code in non-volatile memory has many advantages; the code cannot be downloaded from the wreckage or captured unit, the misslie cannot be used without the code, and the code can be updated without modification to the missle hardware. The disadvantage is it takes time to load the code onto the missle, but this could be done before the launch platform takes off it the missle remains powered on. I have seen up to 16 layers inside a PCB. They can be hard to debug even if you know what's inside ahead of time.

Your English is much better the language I tried to learn in school. Personally, I enjoy your accent, but I have worked with and been friends with many people for whom English was their second language. So I'm not stuck on the idea everyone has to speak like me. I think your English is excellent, and personally I find English being spoken with a strong French accent to be awesome to listen to. My former manager (still a coworker) is French (born and raised) and while he has been living in the US now for 8 years. His accent is still very strong and its something I also look forward to hearing. He is one of my favorite people in the world. 🙂 Please don't stop doing your videos in English. When you measure laquered circuit board, you can use "production sharp & hard pins" attached (even soldered) to measuring sticks. Those pins are spring loaded, so they stand much better than normal sticks. Sharp pins can even punch through cable insulation.

You are correct. There are no controls on seeing the hardware. Not even on machine readable code. There is no violation in showing the hardware I public. Interesting strategy BTW - load all controls software into RAM and the moment the voltage drops the code is gone. I can guess nothing important is within static memory.
