When I saw him in concert, he had music all over the piano. He would start in the crook of piano, read the score some and walk forward. After a phrase he would walk back and look at the music again. He did this all afternoon until in one song he couldn't find the second page. He gave a little shy smile and shrugged - then walked forward and finished the song - gloriously. He knew his music of course but he was nervous.

Please do not mention Alagna and Villazon in "the same breath" as Corelli: In his time they would have been in the choir, or at most comprimarii! This wonderful performance comes from the heart of a tormented soul whose stage fright was unbelievable. He may have transposed it down; he may sing "poorly" in french with rolling R:s or whatever; he may grasp to his score: But just listen, close your eyes if you will: Few sings the prayer with such thrilling intensity! I am deeply moved.

Close your eyes & you'd think he's sung this aria forever instead of clutching a score for dear life. I saw that deer-in-the-headlights look he has at the end close-up when I supered at the Met in the 60s. The stage managers said he had the worst stage fright they'd ever seen & they often had to literally shove him onstage. Like Ruffo & Ponselle, he was largely self-taught as a singer & he was terrified that his prodigious gift could vanish at any moment.

This is a wonderful clip. That score he's holding looks 100 years old! Corelli was a magnificent dramatic tenor and despite his French, this is an excellent rendition of this Le Cid aria. The only one I like better is recording made in the late 20's by the great French lyric tenor,Georges Thill. Mille grazie for posting this.

Phenomenal singer. Voice made up for other issues in performance. There is a video with Antonio Guadagno -I think the spelling is pretty close- where he said Corelli suffered the terror of hell every time he stepped on stage, sometime even throwing up before an entrance. But, Giusto Cielo, the voice! Thank you Franco.

I know that Corelli is not to everyone's taste, but for sheer dramatic power you can't beat this. He could knock down brick walls with that voice.

As loud as he was (I used to call him the on and off guy) I have read more and more that offstage he was a kind and gentle man that loved to cook and had many non- opera friends. I am in medicine and when I learned about the stroke and coma I knew he did not have long, even though 80+ is a good long life. I still wonder how he sounded at that age. Did he sing after retiring?

@rovingdesertfox You must compare the program "arias" to the neapolitan song encores at the end. His demeanor during the encores was the "relaxed" Corelli.

He was such a demanding and generous singer that the idea of singing with less energy in order to preserve his voice wasn't acceptable to him. I can't think of a better interpreter for this aria, except from Georges Thill, who was French.

'Magnificent musical savage' probably best describes Corelli. In italian opera he is amazing but he doesn't understand the difference between Italian and French opera. This is amazing but it isn't 'French' which requires more precision and accuracy and a totally different style to Italian opera.
