I think I begin to see why it was said that "no man is a hero to his valet": there's such a contrast between the master when he's in his shirt with messy hair and the image of refinement and control that he presents to the world when he's in his fashionable coat, waistcoat, etc.

With permission of Dr Laura Vivanco, author of: Faith, Love, Hope and Popular Romance Fiction (free online) Pursuing Happiness: Reading American Romance as Political Fiction For Love and Money: The Literary Art of the Harlequin Mills & Boon Romance Death in Fifteenth-Century Castile: Ideologies of the Elites I post here her answer to my question: "I was asked (in response to a comment I made about the latest of your videos on KZbin) if I knew a source for a quotation about valets. (...) If you go to Google Books books.google.co.uk/books?id=GtBxCgAAQBAJ&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&lpg=PA227&pg=PA227#v=onepage&q&f=false and scroll down the page a bit in The Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs, this should come up on page 227: "No man is a hero to his valet. [...] Attributed in this form to Mme Anne-Marie Bigot de Cornuel (1605-94): il n'y a pas de héros pour son valet-de-chambre [...]. The idea however can be traced back to Alexander the Great's general Antigonus" They give an example below that from 1764 as well: "S. FOOTE Patron II.31 It has been said ... that no man is a hero to his valet de chambre; now I am afraid when you and I grow a little more intimate ... you will be horribly disappointed in your high expectations" Still via Google Books, in George Henry Lewes's The Story of Goethe's Life (I found an 1873 edition, but it's abridged from a longer work written a bit earlier) books.google.co.uk/books?id=12tkAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA217#v=onepage&q&f=false I saw this: Why labor to prove a hero faultless? The reader is no valet de chambre incapable of crediting greatness in a robe de chambre. Never should we forget the profound saying of Hegel in answer to the vulgar aphorism ("No man is a hero to his valet de chambre") namely, "This is not because the Hero is no Hero, but because the Valet is a Valet." (page 217) Hegel and Lewes aren't being complimentary about the intellectual capacities and/or emotional intelligence of valets here, which I feel is unfair. But anyway, all this suggests to me that the saying was probably quite well known at the time that Monsieur had his lever."

@@josephbevacqua9217 I can only speak for myself (Heurteloup): I REALLY LOVE the music that Thys Grobelnik composed for our video. What a unique gift! I also have to laugh when looking at Jean's face when I tell him what he is supposed to do until I'll be back with my guest Mr. Noll. But all in all, I just feel happy that LSA were offered the opportunity of making this short moving (that we have been dreaming of for years) in such a beautiful manor house. Schloss Jegenstorf is a breathtakingly beautiful place.
