this is exactly what happened to me. My whole family spoke french and English . i spoke french until i started school and for me to learn English my family pretty much stopped speaking french at home . So when i took french in high school and they taught formal french from France i was lost and so ways my folks. It is one of my biggest regrets in life that i lost part of my heritage .

I am descended from French Canadians on my mom's side. My great grandmother emigrated from Quebec in 1910. Til the the day she left this earth she spoke almost no English. Regrettably, nobody speaks French anymore. Having grown up here in the western US, it seemed more practical to learn Spanish.

When St. Mary's Church was closed in 2000, the Diocese of Portland sold the church in Little Canada to the Franco American Heritage Center for 1 Dollar. Surprisingly they left the Beautiful stained glass windows.

Mon oncle était un soldat US qui avait épousé la sœur de mon père et qui après sa retraite , sont restés en France. Il m’avait parlé de soldats US qui parlaient anglais avec un fort accent français et il croyait que c’étaient des français récemment arrivés aux États Unis . Mais quand ils lui ont répondu qu’ils étaient des citoyens américains originaires de l’état du Maine et ils avaient appris seulement l’anglais à ,l’école car tous les habitants du village étaient francophones, il avait été surpris. En fait, cette anecdote remonte à soixante-dix ans au moins.

Je suis un franco-Américain qui vit pas trop loin de la ville de Lewiston. Mes ancêtres viennent ici du Québec pour travailler dans les usines textiles. Parmi ma génération la langue est presque morte et rarement parlé dans le public sauf parmi les vieux et des immigrants africains. C'est triste nos ancêtres n'ont rien assez fait pour conserver la langue et leur culture. Mais quelque traditions existe toujours dans la nourriture. J'aime bien une tourtière pendant les fêtes et parfois nous mangeons le pâté chinois. I'm a franco american who doesn't live too far from the city of Lewiston. My ancestors came here from Québec to work in the textile mills and shoe factories that were big in the city in the late 1800's early 1900's. Among my generation the language is almost dead and rarely spoken in public except among the older folks and african immigrants. It's sad our ancestors didn't do enough to conserve the language and their culture.

I'm a Franco American but the thing is a lot of the franco american immigrants have anglocised and forgot the language. Lots of people here with french last names. The language is still spoken somewhat among the older generation but most of those people in the past years have passed on. If you hear French in Maine nowadays it's mostly african immigrants in this area. If you want to hear french from native / ethnic french people you're better off going to aroostook county where there's sizeable acadian population.

Je fréquente les américains depuis plus de 40 ans. Ils sont utopistes en ce qui concernent les langues. Ils en parlent beaucoup mais n’agissent jamais. Je parle 3 langues. Ça ne s’est pas fait tout seul. Je ne l’ai pas gagné à la loterie, non plus. Ce que les américains sont compétents à? À perdre les langues. Je me souviens qu’à Paris, en 1991, l’auberge de jeunesse était dirigée par un américain qui ne connaissait pas un mot de français. Quelle honte!

@Michael Holmes Et pourtant les Américains ont défait les Espagnols à la guerre et n’ont jamais défait les Français. Et qui plus est, les Français leur ont permis de vaincre les Anglais durant la guerre d’indépendance. En plus d’être incompétents en Linguistique, la plupart des Américains le sont aussi en Histoire, sans oublier la Géographie où ils sont nuls.

Je ne comprends pas ce genre de reportages. On nous accuse de "balkaniser la France" en parlant auvergnat ou provençal et on veut "balkaniser" les Etats Unis avec le français langue régionale. Il faut être cohérent.
