Meraviglioso bravissimo Lully!

I'm so obsessed with Lully and his music since this movie. Now I have three versions of Dies Irae. Still, this version is the best for me.

It's 'Le Roi danse', translated 'The King dances'. It's a french movie, very beautiful, both the music and the pictures. A recommandation!

Unfortunately the requiem is not on the soundtrack, this is the reason I put the information about the motet Dies Irae in the description. You can find it on amazon.

This is untrue because "Dies Irae" by Lully was composed in 1683 for the Queen Marie Thérèse funeral (Louis XIV's wife) and not for the Queen Anne d'Autriche funeral (Louis XIV's mother) who died in 1666. Here it miss the Bass singer part between Orchestral Ouverture and Choir reprise (Dies Irae, Dies Illa, Solvet Saeclum in Favilla, Teste David cum Sibylla / This day will be the day of towering rage when this world will be crushed in ashes. That's what David and the Sibyl asserted)

artgo2000: BLESS YOU!! I was going crazy looking for this piece on the soundtrack. Well, o.k., I didn't actually buy the soundtrack, I was looking through the tracks as listed on Amazon - all 35 of them, typing each one on KZbin, hoping someone uploaded a version of that track on KZbin... NOTHING! I kept thinking did I miss it somehow!? Thanks so much for the info, and for uploading this clip. Now I know to buy 2 CDs, the soundtrack AND Lully's Dies Irae.

He sure was, or the young fellow who played him was! George Blagden in Versailles, played a pretty good-looking Louis, as well! As a young man, Louis 14, was good-looking as a young man!

What's ironic about this piece is that it's probably closer to how things happened than any documentary : Louis XIV was the first to bring music/orchestra on the battlefield, exactly that kind of stuff... That King is recognized for having astoundingly raised standards for science, Culture and Arts, then after spreading throughout Europe while leading us into the Age of Enlightenment. "Louis The Great, the Sun King".

The mother of the king LuisXIV has just died, and he's bewailing her. they hadn't been in good terms, so i think the scene is quite interesting. the way he realises that he has lost someone close, and so on.

I enjoyed solemn, dark Baroque music like this--with drums in the opening. Who else wrote music like this? And why were drums not incorporated more with dark strings? This is his 'Dies Irae', I think.
