This song is a reimagining of a song written by le Chœur de la Joyeuse Garde about King St Louis IX's departure for the 7th Crusade.
St Louis IX is the only canonised King of France. He led a pious life, thanks to the formation of his mother, Blanche de Castille. She instilled in the young Louis that death is preferable to committing a mortal sin. This is something that he held for the rest of his life and he even wrote it down in his testament.
He was renowned for his charity. The peace and blessings of the realm come to us through the poor he would say. Beggars were fed from his table, he ate their leavings, washed their feet, ministered to the wants of the lepers, and daily fed over one hundred poor. He founded many hospitals and houses: the House of the Felles-Dieu for reformed prostitutes; the Quinze-Vingt for 300 blind men, and hospitals at Pontoise, Vernon, and Compiégne.
