He's been my hero for a few years now... with his team of amazing and dedicated musicians. They made the "covid times" bearable for me. I never miss any occasion to show them playing in the classroom. Today, I used "Les Voix humaines" with 10-11 years old children, at the very beginning of the class. Just a few very quick explanations about "lute", "theorb" and "archilute" to catch their technical attention... then they were hypnotized. Those who don't have much attention to music could see the playing. We need musicians like Thomas so so so much.

I am enchanted by this concert. Not only is the music and the musicianship simply out of this world, the production quality, the lighting, the sound, the videography is just first rate. And oh the setting. When this gorgeous music was composed in the 1600's, these walls were already 400 years old. What history this space has seen. Kudos to the audience which remained hushed throughout. One can even hear a bird from outside the walls at 21:50. Yes, let this night go on.

This festival is held every year in the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Maguelone (the Saint-Peter-and-Saint-Paul Cathedral of Maguelone), located on a tiny volcanic island in the middle of a seaside pond, home of hundreds of fauna and flora species, most iconic being pink flamingo. This minuscule island is a paradise of trees and bushes, less than a kilometer away from the sand beaches of the Mediterranean sea. This roman fortified Cathedral used to be, for ten centuries until the XVIth, an archbishopry so important it was regarded only second to this of Rome. In today's standards, we would call Maguelone the capital of the Region. It also was a gathering place for merchants, travelers, pilgrims, reigning nobles, "politicians", various representatives of the Pope, etc. It was only in 1536 that archbishops left the Cathedral to settle in the nearby (and rapidly growing) city of Montpellier. Nowadays considered a major city and community of the South of France (a region named Occitanie = "oxeetahnee"), it already was a World-renowned Faculty of Medecine, founded 1220, with a garden of medicinal plants and its own facility for dissection of corpses. Turning the city into a major lighthouse of knowledge. In 2020, the Faculté de Médecine celebrated its 800th anniversary as the World's oldest. And ranked to the highest highs of teaching, in all fields of medical specialties. If you want to attend the "Festival de Maguelone" of baroque music, search for the village of Villeneuve-les-Maguelone, where the Cathedral is located, some 10 kilometers south-west from downtown Montpellier. And be prepared to live moments and sceneries like no others anywhere, for it surely is a more-than-spiritual experience. Travelling through music in such a beautiful place, surrounded by unique natural and architectural treasures, can not be told... one has to live it.

Les noms de GUILLAUME BOUZIGNAC {1587~1643}, JEAN-BAPTISTE LULLY {1632~1687}, MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER {1643~1704}, MICHEL-RICHARD DE LALANDE {1657~1726}, MARIN MARAIS {1656~1728}, FRANÇOIS COUPERIN {1668~1733}, ANDRE CAMPRA {1660~1744}, JEAN PHILIPPE RAMEAU {1683~1764}, JEAN-JOSEPH CASSANEA DE MONDONVILLE {1711~1772}, ANDRE-ERNEST-MODESTE GRÉTRY {1741~1813}, témoignent, aux côtés de tant d’autres, de l’extraordinaire foisonnement artistique de cette période. Ce patrimoine musical sombre dans l’oubli après la Révolution française et tout au long du XIXe siècle. Il faudra attendre ACHILLE-CLAUDE DEBUSSY {1862~1918} ou CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS {1835~1921}, pour y porter à nouveau un regard curieux avant que ne se développe au XXe siècle, une école de musicologie française préparant l’éclosion dans les années 80 du renouveau Baroque. La démarche d’interprétation sur instruments anciens est l’une des principales caractéristiques de cette redécouverte. Merci pour ce grand moment de musique Baroque française du XVIIe siècle, avec ses grands compositeurs qui sont éternel. Et ce grand spectacle dans l’abbaye de MAGUELONE grandiose avec ses deux grands artistes LEA DESANDRE et THOMAS DUNFORD, que j’ai beaucoup aimé bravo.

La liste des étoiles qui constituent la constellation fabuleuse des artistes qui illustrèrent ces deux siècles d'or de la culture musicale française peut encore être complétée ! je pense à Joseph BODIN DE BOISMORTIER dont la résurrection est toute récente et d'autres encore...
