Lea Salonga is a legend and National Treasure in the Philippines. As an 18 year old she tried out for the musical "Miss Saigon" They were looking for an Asian to play the role and they had tried in many countries without success until they found Lea. The stage play premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in the West End on September 20, 1989. It was directed by renowned British director, Nicholas Hytner, and starred Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce. The production closed ten years later, on October 30, 1999, after more than 4,200 performances. lea won the first Tony Award for an Asian in 1991 for her role in Miss Saigon. She is the consummate professional who is always prepared and can handle any role from movies, to stage performances to Broadway. SOFIEEE!! She's one of the country's finest and Philippine National Artist. She's the original singer of the disney song A Whole New World of the disney movie Aladdin back in 1990. She is one of the music influences of many Philippine singers like Morissette Amon, Sarah Geronimo, Regine Velasquez and many more.

She was making huge strides as a Filipino Woman in the entertainment industry at a time when the Philippines wasn't recognized as a hotbed of singing talent. She should be so much more recognized and bigger than she is credited for, but she is still a greatly accomplished veteran performer :-)

the entire event - a concert version of Les Mis with the top performers chosen.... is highly recommended, it's like a master class, everyone is tops. Utube or DVD. And of course L.S. is now a broadway superstar, having won the ' Miss Saigon' lead at 17.... near 30 years ago. for real amazing singing, try ' Anna Bolena' an I think fairly accurate Opera telling of the English monarchy. Elina Garanza and Anna Netrebko, superstars. or just Garanza in ' Carmen'. kinda amazing. Blue ray disc is just super.

She is also a Disney princess (Jasmine and Mulan) and was named a "Disney Legend" in 2011. I saw her performance of Eponine singing this very song in Les Miserables on Broadway/New York many years ago and still remember it to this day. She is now 49 years old and a judge in The Voice Kids (Philippines) (along with Sarah Geronimo). Yep, L.S. is super. ( bit late here) but this entire production - 10 th Anniversary. of ' Les Mis' is super, every performer is tops, like a master class & one of the best 21/2 hrs you will ever spend. well worth searching out, even studying. Also a famous novel from about 1840.

Very late finding this vid! Great reaction. I know others have mentioned bits of this, but Lea was the first Asian woman (and I think first woman of color) to play Eponine on Broadway in LES MISERABLES in 1993 and this clip is from the LES MISERABLES 10th Anniversary Dream Cast concert in 1995 (she was 24).
