Impressive, but the instrument he played had far, FAR wider spacing than the 12 strings we're used to - think a 2 inch nut and 3 inches spacing at the saddle! It was a real bear to play, though.

The story behind this one is deep ... Apparently he sang this song to the Louisiana governor and effected him so much he released leadbelly and a bunch of other prison early ..... Leadbelly himself often quotes this moment as the beginning of his true musical career and discovery by Lomax a musical academic ... Another layer of mythos to his already eventful life

What I find interesting is how there's parts in the song where the tempo increases. I wonder if that was made intentional in the recordings to allude to moments the governor is watching Led belly and the stress he felt to capture his attention.
