NOTES: Leadership Development - Don’t Be A Boss - Be A Leader, Like Jesus.
Why do people leave their jobs? The number one reason: they don’t like their bosses. People don’t leave companies-they leave bad bosses!
Why? That’s because many bosses don’t understand what it takes to be a leader. Power and influence can do unusual things to people.
According to a Gallup poll that interviewed over a million workers, the number one reason that people leave their job is because they don't like their boss. In fact, someone said people don't leave companies, they leave bad bosses.
If you want to test a person’s character, give them power.
How do we deal with insecurities as a leader?
We control, we micromanage, we become overly critical, we become defensive, we tend to blame others, we stop listening, or we deflect with humor and sarcasm.
When you have to say, “I’m the boss!” you’re wrongly leveraging power.
That’s why you should sit down and fire your inner boss and instead strive to be an effective leader from the inside out!
Simon Sinek says it this way: “A boss has a title. A leader has the people.”
Jesus was leader - His greatest commandment was, love people.
Mark 12:30-31- Laughing Bird Paraphrase
You will love your neighbor as attentively as you love yourself.
“Don’t Be A Boss - Be A Leader like Jesus.” - David Breed
Let’s look at a few differences between a boss and a leader:
1) A boss instills fear. A leader inspires confidence, Like Jesus.
Fear generally leads to inaction, which leads to a lack of confidence, which leads to more fear. Instill confidence in your team, what you stand for, and where your organization is going. Encouragement will breed confidence.
2) A boss assigns blame. A leader takes responsibility, Like Jesus.
When you are always blaming others, you are usually avoiding some important issue about your own leadership. Usually something you can’t even do yourself. Take responsibility and learn your job and give it your all!
3) A boss demands loyalty. A leader extends trust, Like Jesus.
If you have ever had a boss who demanded loyalty, chances are good they weren’t loyal to you, and so you didn’t trust them. A great leader extends trust and therefore receives loyalty.
4) A boss controls people. A leader empowers people, Like Jesus.
Controlling bosses limit progress. We can have control or we can have growth, but we can’t have both. If we're empowering people, we're giving people responsibility, not just tasks. When we give them tasks, we're training them “to do,” but when we give them responsibility, we’re empowering them “to lead.” If you hired someone, you probably hired them to make decisions, improve things, and push the mission forward!
"Leadership is not about wielding authority, it's about empowering people.” - Becky Brodin
We hired you because you're talented. We brought you on to improve things in our organization. We believe that you're capable of pushing the mission forward. Positive!
5) A boss is often guarded. A leader is transparent, Like Jesus.
An insecure boss appears distant, rarely admits to weaknesses, and likes to control information. A secure leader, on the other hand, admits to mistakes, doesn’t have to know it all, and is often very real and vulnerable. People may admire strengths, but they connect through weaknesses.
Think about it, people actually like it when you're not perfect. People admire your strengths - but they connect with you because of your weaknesses.
“Anyone can make you think that they are important. A leader helps you see that you are important!”
Remember, you don’t have to know it all to be a great leader! Be yourself. People would rather follow a leader who is always real than one who is always right.
Jesus was always real and transparent with people, He is the most successful people person.
Because people would rather follow a leader who's always real than one who's always right. Don't be guarded as leader. Let your guard down. Be transparent, be vulnerable.
Lets review, We need to understand leadership isn't about title or position, its about trust, love and influence.
1) A boss instills fear. A leader inspires confidence.
2) A boss assigns blame. A leader takes responsibility.
3) A boss demands loyalty. A leader extends trust.
4) A boss controls people. A leader empowers people.
5) A boss is often guarded. A leader is transparent.
Sit down with yourself today, be honest wit yourself and give yourself a test. Do you need to fire one of these traits in your leadership style?
Mark 12:30-31- Laughing Bird Paraphrase
You will love your neighbor as attentively as you love yourself.
