No. Hawk just gives assignments to Slaughter to take point. But he never outranks him. In military chain of command, in the field a first sergeant outranks a warrant officer even if a warrant officer is technically an officer. but, a first sergeant must defer to a warrant officer in terms of specialized roles. It's similar to corporate roles, one can be a director, but if a manager holds a department, they hold a higher position, for a director only holds a title. Slaughter can be in charge due to an appointment or assignment, but if Beach Head pulls rank, he should defer to him. Duke as a first sergeant outside of chain of command must also defer to Flint. However, because the GI Joes are a specialized unit, and the CO Hawk appointed Duke as the acting first sgt. Flint must follow Duke. Military command can be tricky.

Sounds overly complicated but I get it. I was once head of my own department but still had to defer to other managers on other subjects outside of my department.

What I don’t get is why they didn’t set up G I Joe like an Army Company of 4 Platoons. Company Commander Executive Officer 1st Sergeant Then Platoon Leader and Platoon Sergeant x 4. This way you had General Hawk leading the overall unit, then you had a Company Commander like Captain Gridiron. Executive Officer like Lieutenant Falcon and 1st Sergeant Duke. Then a Lieutenant for a Platoon Leader then Staff Sergeant Flint as 1st Platoon Sergeant. Another Lieutenant for 2nd Platoon Leader then Staff Sergeant Beachead for 2nd Platoon Sergeant. Another Lieutenant for 3rd Platoon Leader then Sergeant First Class Sergeant Slaughter for 3rd Platoon Sergeant. Then another Lieutenant for 4th Platoon Leader then Roadblock for a Platoon Sergeant. All the years GI Joe has been around and they never asked one veteran if the command structure ever made any sense ?????? What did G I Joe have against Officers, Platoon Leaders and Platoons anyway ??????? What happens when all 5 are on the injured list then what ????? The real Army structures itself like I mentioned so backups are always ready.

In my collection. Hawk is a Pentagon liason. Falcon is the team leader. Flint reports to Falcon and then there are team leads under him that he sends on missons. Beachhead is still 4th in line.

With 1987's Big Boa as Cobra's intended rival to Rocky because they could not get the Rocky character licensed I was surprised that Hasbro did not go for another boxer most likely Mike Tyson who was about to become the Undisputed Heavyweight World Champion giving him the codename Sergeant Major Iron Mike as a second drill instructor alongside Sergeant Slaughter or maybe as a substitute character in the UK Action Force line

Great video. As a military veteran & a life long GI Joe, the leadership of GI seems to require a suspension of belief. General Hawk would be the highest ranking official, but I have seen Flint noted as a Warrant Officer & Duke & Beachhead listed as SFC (E-7). Meaning that Lt. Falcon would outrank everyone but Gen. Hawk, which would make since when he tried to pull rank on Duke. With that, I view GI Joe as its own special forces unit, where badassery takes priority over rank, but usually those things are synonymous in the actual military. In my head, the ranking would be Gen. Hawk as the CO then Duke as a Sergeant Major, Flint, Lady Jaye & Stalker as Colonels or Captains & Beachhead, SGT Slaughter, Scarlet, Roadblock as First Sergeants.

Yeah the ranking system was always a bit strange. In the DDP comic of the 2000s, they had Duke join the CIA and do some Black Ops, so when he returned to GI Joe he was addressed as Agent Hauser rather than Sgt, and that made the ranking more palatable.

Duke was a Master Sergeant (E-8) not an E-7, and eventually Beach Head was promoted to a Command Sergeant Major (E-9)

The reson Stalker is not recognized is cause the backlash the character got by the black community as a recruiting tool for the army. Remember this was early 1980 Vietnam still a hot topic. So they pulled the character but 2 years later there was no black character so enter Roadblock.

Stalker is only below Duke and Hawk in the comics. So is Scarlett. Beachhead is a field leader only. And a drill instructor of rookie Joes on the field. Whereas Slaughter is the drill instructor in general of all Joes. Outback has also been given mission command. Falcon, Gridiron and Flint are at about the same level with Stalker and Scarlet.

Falcon Lt. and Gridiron Cpt. are officers they out rank Stalker and Scarlet which are sergeants (E-5). Steeler of the OG crew is also a 2nd Lt.
