Leaf Barrel Compost Experiment Results Pt 2

It's only been five months but I was pressed for compost. Time to open up and reveal what's inside and 1 barrel had a surprise in there!

I did something similar with wood shavings from a tree stump I had ground down. I drilled holes in a garbage can, stood a PVC pipe in the center then filled with the wood chips, after about a week I pulled the pipe, everything stayed in place. I did cover during dry spells and opened up to allow rain to get in. It took a year to completely break down, but the end product was well worth the wait. Stay Well!!! New subscriber

I add all the grass clippings during the year to my vegetable garden and all the leaves, coffee grounds, chicken manure etc. I don't turn it over at all. Just pull away the litter and plant in the black soil and pull all the litter back. It used to be heavy clay. It's now very friable rich soil. The truck is to leave everything on top as mulch and always add more. The worms will do all the composting. So I'm gardening in a compost pile. That soil grows anything like crazy.

Neat experiment. If you drill several 1/2 inch holes in the bottom of the barrels and lightly wet the ground below, worms will find their way into the barrels to help turn them into compost. If you mix in some vegetable food scraps (no more than 1/3 %), you'll attract even more worms. Likewise, adding pieces of non shiny; corrugated cardboard and shredded paper, the worms will love it. (Additionally, worms can be purchased inexpensively inside Walmart, by the fishing section, in a refrigerator). Worms also love leftover; breads, buns, muffins, tortillas, etc..

A few observations. Pile is too small, add worms, wet it more. Make the pile on the ground at least 6-ft tall. AS you build it, add a lot of worms and make sure it's wet. Don't just spray it like everyone does, those dry leaves are hydrophobic, soak them in a barrel for a few hours to let them absorb the water then dump them out and use them. That'll lock in the moisture needed by all the microbes to break them down.

Thank You so much! You rock! I have ADD, Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Migraines. I have not been able to work for 5 yrs now. I just started to compost with 2 smaller bins. Using leaves that I mulched, very small twigs,toilet paper rolls torn in small pieces,coffee grounds & egg shells crunched up. I have watched so many videos & taken notes I was about to explode! So drilled holes in 2 totes we had in the garage & started dumping the stuff in & watering. Oh & pizza boxes torn up! Yum right?!?! lol Wish me luck & Thanks again!!

Wet leaves and lawn clippings like to pack together and go anaerobic Too many “greens” (manure/“hot” material) ends up producing ammonia gas which is also bad for soil life
