Leak Stereo 30 Amplifier Repair and Renovation

I took the footage to be able to show the customer in the amp and work done whilst still observing 2020's infinite people mixing restrictions! Decided to make it a bit more proper and upload it, as I have been encouraged by so many people to do this type of video! Hopefully I will get time to do more.

I have the Leak stereofetic FMtuner,which is excellent -the power supply similar to the 30 Amp.The bridge rectifier had 1 diode hot.The whole chassis is microphonic-a tap and it rings like a bell through the speakers. I found the dicky diode with a kitchen temperature gun.So old,thinking to replace the 4.Your explanation is great,thanks.

Brilliant video im looking for the 4 diodes for my leak 70 transformer there stamped 395c wy1 im trying to source some new ones also those resistsrs r1r2r3 are those 2 watts ?

Hi - thank you for your video. I have my father's Leak Stereo 30 plus and and the tuner. They have been in a cupboard since 1996. I also have the Wharfedale W3's. There is an original label on the mains cable of the amp. from the Leak workshop giving the inspection date as 29/4/70 , and other information such as serial number. The label is about 2 inch sq. with a perforated edge, and headed H.J.Leak Co. Ltd; London, W.3. I am thinking of seeking someone to professionally refurbish both the tuner and the amp.

Hi MJTV, Like another comment above, I have one of these Leak Stereo 30s and Tuner with a couple of Wharfdale Dovedales. The tuner uses tubes but the amp has the Germanium transistors. I remember my folks splashing out on it. I grew up with it and am very loth to Chuck it especially as it still works pretty well. One of the channels in the amp is weak and I would like to know if you offer a repair/renovation service. All I am looking for is to bring the weak channel up a bit to match the good one. I have already installed an external FM aerial and repaired the ‘magic-eye’ tuning aid and I rather like the period sound it gives.

Thanks for showing the innards of the thing. For demo-ing the audio, it's probably meaningless on youtube but for the sake of those who think otherwise, my recommendation would be to have a standard setup where you can record the output using the same equipment every time - bar the one under test. If you could state what the rest of the gear is in the audio chain, that might be helpful to some. Also, try to use the highest quality microphone and recording device you can get and use the same mic and recorder every time. Take care to have the microphone fixed at the correct distance and in the right pointing direction. A mistake many reviewers make is to walk around with the recording device at hand. This makes an already flawed audio medium (youtube) even less effective. Also, if the setup is in a noisy area, try to record at a quiet time e.g. at night when there are no other noise generating devices on or street noise. All this is kinda pointless if you cannot play the right music or test tracks and unfortuanately most music on youtube is copyrighted. One approach I've rarely seen is recording the output from test tracks. Armed with a sound level meter, one could provide somewhat more useful recordings by keeping the sound level constant in all videos. That probably takes a lot of effort though - and gear. Some people use software to run frequency sweeps on the device under test but without a constant setup or fixed microphone distance, these videos do not tell much.

Hi. Thanks for watching. I am actually a sound engineer with a pro studio full of equipment, lol. I was VERY busy when doing these first videos and just had to get them done with a camera alone! You are right of course.....I will be less lazy about it in future videos!

I think it was yes. I think there were different models though. It was a customer's amp so I can't remember fully, but this one may have been a 'Delta' model.

Hi there, hope your well. Could you explain how one connects speaker cables to this amp. It has the original pin connectors but when I insert the cable ends they go right through into the amp and I think I may have shorted one channel. It’s the original germanium transistors model Works great otherwise. Very nice sounding and still practical piece of kit Namaste

Hi. I can't remember what connectors were I'm afraid. I think they may have been those old seventies ones with a spade and a pin. They look like you could just stick a wire in but I would not advise it as they are often just open connectors at the back!

Hi eddie. You use banana plugs for the speaker cable. You can wedge in with matches. Just make sure you don't push the wire in more than 2cm before wedg ing.

Hi there, they are DIN speaker plugs. Put that in a search on ebay, you will find plenty solder on also some with screw terminals to connect your speaker cable. I'm running a leak delta 70. Great amplifiers.
