I have this old cash iron pipe that is rotting from the inside and I have been making cheap quick repairs for a few years. This thing needs to be replaced but I just hate to do such a large job on my own or spend the big bucks for a pro.
PC Products PC-Plumbing Epoxy Putty, amzn.to/3aJTCZn
leaking cast iron water pipe quick fix
So I was told about fixing leaks with epoxy and some black tape and this really works well and I have one repair that has been holding for a few years already. It gets the job done.
The total repair cost about 8 dollars and 20 min if you have easy access to the pipe.
Here's some gear I use:
GoPro HERO8 Black amzn.to/3m4PqH8
Camera: Canon G7XII amzn.to/2ydDTBc
Manfrotto Pixi Mini Tripod: amzn.to/2SlfjoZ
HyperX Cloud II Headset: amzn.to/3bQ6VW6

@Mattyew
@Mattyew 4 жыл бұрын
One more reply because mine has held up perfectly so far... If the putty doesn't stick, you need to change your strategy before it hardens. Right away! I found it frustrating in the beginning. Do whatever you can to have a dry surface. Although it isn't impossible to apply it on a wet surface it's very difficult especially if your hands are dry. For a pipe that had stuff leaking while I was trying to apply it I would hold paper towel there and remove it half a second before pushing the putty on. To help adhere to the pipe I found kneeding with a glove that didn't stick too much helped. Push down and smear it onto the metal with force. If there were leaks after applying I would dry the hardened putty and repeat the process. After every ten applications it helps to change gloves so you don't get hardened metal in your new putty. It also prevents the stuff from sticking to your fingers better than sticking to the pipes. Finally, work with smaller pieces at a time. You'll have better luck than struggling to rush a quality job on a piece that's so big you don't have enough time to finess it into the metal. If you have dry pipes, your process will be 10x faster. Good luck 👍

@@ProjectsandReviewsZone We can’t wrap with tape, because the pipe is against the basement wall. Which way is better? Just apply more putty on top of the existing repair putty, or to remove the first putty starting from scratch again? According to the instruction, the putty will dry in 20 minutes. We waited 20 minutes then turned water on to test if it was leaking. Was it too soon to turn the water on to test?

However on the inside there is a trap door my dad fashioned under a cabinet when the house was built that exposes the back of the tub. I followed the overflow pipe down and found a hole past a joint just before it turns into the p trap! My plan is to seal the hole with epoxy, let dry solid and then suck residue out pipe using a shop vac. Still trying to save that $5000!

HA! HA! HA!🤣 A good thing that I had bought two EPOXYS, because I was KNEADING! and KNEADING! the EPOXY, as if it were bread!! The EPOXY had turned into SOLID ROCK! I couldn't use that one anymore, so I had to unwrap the other one and this time I kneaded it QUICKLY, and Quickly I pasted it around the pipe, and then I wrapped the entire roll of electrical tape on top and around the pipe ! I'm going to use the washing machine, in a couple of hours, and see if my plumbing job worked. I'll get back to you, and I let you know.

Electric tape works for this; so you don't need a waterproof or plumbing tape?
@ProjectsandReviewsZone
@ProjectsandReviewsZone 4 жыл бұрын
The tape just holds the puddy in place when it cures. The tape is not for holding water back. So any tape might work. I heard some did not use tape

And to add my input, I used black electrical, and sealed it just like this video and it worked great. Now I need to fix another area on the same pipe. Just trying to buy more time. But that tape is fine.

Hi! Can I use this also before it starts leaking ? Just for prevention?
@ProjectsandReviewsZone
@ProjectsandReviewsZone 5 жыл бұрын
Sure you can. I could tell where it will leak because I had a little line of rust on the bottom of the pipe. So if you can spot some signs then I don't see why you can't try and catch it before it opens up.

This should only be a temporary fix though, if it's exposed lead and oakum cast iron, then it will for sure not pass inspection so in in the end, you'll need a plumber anyways

Yes the pipe was leaking with un pressurized left over water. So as I applied the puddy some water was coming out the sides. So use enough to covet the hole and sides. At least an inch overlap.
