Leaking Orbit or Champion Brass Anti-Siphon Valve Repair

Great job Adam. It's a perfect video example of what you find when removing the cap. The Orbit and the "Champion" valve are identical. I would add the word Champion into the title "Leaking Orbit Champion Anti-Siphon....". There are tens of thousands Champion valves used in the Southwest and this would dramatically help people find this video. The Champion rebuild kit is RK-30C for 3/4" and RK-31C for 1" valves . The Orbit rebuild kit is 53066H and comes with parts for both 3/4 and 1" valves.

This video helped me a lot with two Champion valves that hadn't been touched in decades. What I found is that the gaskets and washers weren't damaged, Instead, the brass surfaces that the gasket and washer married up to had developed small pitting from corrosion over time, allowing water to get past the imperfect seal. I was able to use some 220 grit sandpaper and a block of wood on those parts--the underside of the brass cap (@3:48) and the top of the valve body (@1:56)--until the pits were gone and the surfaces were smooth & wide enough to create a good seal. As for the gasket and washer, while they weren't damaged, they were very brittle. I made the mistake of removing them on the first valve, which caused the black washer to tear. Learning from that, I left them in place on the second valve and simply cleaned them gently: first with a toothbrush, then lightly with some super-fine sandpaper (600 grit), and finally applying some light penetrating oil to soften them. Everything's working as good as new now!

my 40-ish year old champion didn't budge with a smaller pipe wrench and the top cap sheared off from the threaded portion when I tried to force it. broke three pins that are casted into the cap and pressed into holes in the machined/threaded fitting. the funny arrangement provides air-gap for the vacuum breaker. so if its not turning for you, don't try to force it or you'll be in my shoes. gonna have to drill the old pins out and print/buy a new cap or just replace the whole thing.

I saw you cut to getting the cap released. Did you have to do something special to get it off? Mine is stuck

Mine is leaking on the valve stem when it is on or opened. Does this valve kit have the parts to repair the turning valve too?

Yes. The rebuild kits have the thick rubber sleeve that inserts around the cross handle shaft. Whenever working on these valves, clean all the brass threads and components thoroughly with wire brush or use a drill with wire brush wheel. Then grease all rubber, plastic, or fiber seals that are inserted. This will extend the life. These breakdown mostly because of the heat caused by the sun. The valves are only built to withstand 110 degree water, as stamped on the cap. In Arizona the static water inside the valve can reach 140 or higher.

i'm not sure you fixed anything, you just regasketed the anti-siphon part that keeps water from going back into the water system. if you had an actual water leak it would have been in the other part of the valve that controls the water flow. i wish you would have shown what happened when you activated the system after you "fixed" it...i'm sure it was still leaking
