Steve Goodman and John Prine wrote this song. David Allen Coe recommended that Goodman include references to dogs, pickups, etc., so Goodman wrote that iconic verse. Coe inserted his own name into his version of the song. Regardless, it's a great song, and lots of fun. LeAnn does it justice, especially with the audience callouts.

Thank you for remembering Steve Goodman and John Prine as the true writers. Sadly they are both gone too soon. Steve Goodman wrote one of my all time favorites the City of New Orleans. Arlo Guthrie also recorded his version as did way tooooo many including Sinatra in the 70's. However here's a link to Steves Version or HIS and PRINES song here on KZbin. You'll notice the last verse is a bit different than Coe's and Rimes and I think a little bit beter. I know my bias is showing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3-rZal3r9V9ers Also there is Prine also with a live performance here on KZbin. My heart goes out to these two wonderful beautiful men and song writers. I wish LeAnn had given THEM CREDIT by name instead of saying something about a man she never met writing this song.....no two great men wrote THE SONG.

LeAnne you needed to add You don't have to call me Steve Goodman and you don't have to call me John Prine. To that verse because they together wrote that song back in 71 I believe. And their versions are priceless. Coe's was pretty good but I'm always bias towards the song writers when they are also the entertainer too. RIP all three gentlemen I hope your all singing your heart outs in heaven.

Leanne in a small club? I'd have given nearly anything to be there. Boy she's good.

If you have never been to Gruene Hall, you have got to go, just for the experience. LeAnn has performed there for several years now in February, right around Valentines Day. She did 3 shows there this past February. Check it out, I'm sure she will be back next February. You can also find a live recording of her show there from a few years back on whatever music streaming service you use. Its called "Rimes-Live at Gruene Hall".

Thanks for the reply, I'm in Indiana. I don't much like the great big concerts. I worked in a blues club in Indy for a decade and a half. Wed get the occasional star play the place and it was so good when they could interact with the audience like that.
