@TheBrassTeacher
@TheBrassTeacher 5 жыл бұрын
@@xmoney-pb5uo Keep going! The key is practice. Use a tuner if you have one to check that you're playing the right notes. If you're consistently finding that you pitch too low, you might be better suited to a slightly higher instrument like the tenor horn or flugal horn.

Picasso Gaming I also came over to horn from trumpet. The fingerings are basically the same, but begin at different points within the scale...which is to be expected because the horn is pitched in a different key than trumpet. I’m still in the process of relearning the horn as it’s been a long time since I played horn. Normally played trumpet and soprano bugle...

I'm a trombonist/violinist and I've always been curious about french horn but upon hearing it, it doesn't sound so much different up close, probably in a closed area but like violin, it sounds so violiny when heard from afar. I've always expected french horn to be less brassy and more of a light and airy horn sound like a cave man horn sound made from animal's horn or a spiral seashell.

Thank you for making this video: I have clear the Bb side finally!!! However, the F side is confusing for me. I thought that in an F horn open was C but apparently is E and G as well. And I thought that 1st valve in F side was D but apparently is F as well. But I’m grateful that Bb side is finally clear to me. Thank you so much.

I think I see the problem. The French horn is a transposing instrument, a C on an F horn will come out as F. When she plays CDEFG, that will sound FGABbC on the piano.
@johnpereira5926
@johnpereira5926 4 жыл бұрын
@@mattfenner9457 Goodness! Is that right? I had no idea the French Horn was a transposing instrument! Since French horns commonly stand in F or Bflat (not to mention some that stand in G) and, moreover, double horns in F AND Bflat are increasingly common and presumably all must make do with ONE written/printed score I have always inferred that the French Horn MUST be a non-transposing instrument requiring the player to learn to relate his/her personal choice of model to the standard printed/written music.
@mattfenner9457
@mattfenner9457 4 жыл бұрын
John Pereira If you were the one that posted the question, I would concede that there is a different reason to the one I suggested. The comment meant to help absolute beginners. Your sarcasm is unnecessary.

@@mattfenner9457 Sarcasm? What sarcasm? None intended. I simply acknowledged that this info' is new to me. I hope @The Brass Teacher will explain how the needs of players of different models (and different modes of the same model) are met by the convention.

so i’ve been playing trombone for 6 years and i wanna learn to play french horn. what horn should i buy? idk what key or if i should get a single or double? i’ve looked at different ones but i don’t know what one will be the best for me. i will mostly use it for fun and for any ensembles that i could play in when there’s not a need for multiple trombones. what do you recommend?
@TheBrassTeacher
@TheBrassTeacher 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on a few things - how much money do you have to spend and what level you are playing at. At a professional level a double horn is a must for the flexibility and fuller tone it creates. If its just for fun and playing at a local level, I would plump for a single as they are cheaper.
@Oliver-qe5uq
@Oliver-qe5uq 2 жыл бұрын
I suggest you start out with single as it is cheaper but it’s also harder to play higher notes so Having a double helps but you choose

@mybeefgotroasted
@mybeefgotroasted 3 жыл бұрын
Write them down from highest to lowest, every day, until you can remember them. Then I would attempt to start with 2nd line G as your first note (starts you off with a slightly wider range) I always did one warmup that goes like this G, F, C, F, G (hold down first valve) F#, Eb, B, Eb, F# (Hold down second) F, D, Bb, D, F (Hold down first) Then it would keep going down until you couldn't go anymore.

My mouthpiece is really small and often when im playing my mouth is sliding off of the mouthpiece, would a slightly larger mouthpiece improve this?
@TheBrassTeacher
@TheBrassTeacher 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like it may be the problem although it depends on the instrument. If it is for F horn then I would suggest getting a mouthpiece with a wider rim. This worked for me. There are 2 things you can change with a detachable rim mouthpiece - the depth and width. See if you can have a try on multiple mouthpieces in your local shop.

Good, and the presenter is very enthusiastic. But I wish there were some graphics to go with this lesson, showing the location of the notes on sheet music as well as the corresponding pictures of what tabs should be open/depressed. Also, that the two registers (F and B-flat) should be in separate sections. From an educational psychology perspective, that would be most effective.
