Every morning when I let my dogs out I’ve noticed a drumming noise followed by a rolling call, and eventually noticed it was a woodpecker on my neighbors house, thanks to this video I found it’s a red bellied woodpecker :)

We love our woodpeckers here in northeast Illinois. The most common one that visits our feeders are the Downy, the Hairy, and the Red Bellied.

I can hear the red bellied woodpecker but can never lay eyes on it as it flys away quickly. Is that how they are in Illinois?

Thank you SO much! I knew it was a woodpecker calling based upon the drumming and the debris falling out of the tree, but I couldn't remember which kind made the very distinctive call. I'm pretty sure it is either a Piliated or a Northern Flicker. I now know what to listen for.

Most common in rural MA are hairy and downy. The red bellied woodpecker call is familiar, and I just photographed a big pileated woodpecker. He called out as he flew away.

Pretty sure I had a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers this spring, but I haven't put out more suet (it was so hot this summer I was positive it'd just melt) so I haven't seen them much. Have been hearing lots of drumming from one or more woodpeckers in the last week though! So maybe as it cools off I'll be able to attract them again.

We have all these birds in our woods except for the Yellow bellied and Redheaded. A red bellied hit our high gabled window this morning and it killed him. 😢 We have these gables on both ends of our greatroom filled with windows. Several birds have thumped them, but not this hard. They do reflect like a mirror. Also, they may be thinking it's a clear tunnel through there. There will not be covered ever, because we want the light and like to see the sky and trees. Is there anything you can think of that might help keep others from slamming into them? Maybe they just need time to get used to the house? It's still under construction.
@BadgerlandBirding3 ай бұрын
@@wuznotbornyesterda dang that’s sad :( you could install bird safe glass! They also have things you can put on your window where you can still see out but it’s not as reflective when looking inside! Unfortunately glass isn’t something birds will get used to. If nothing is changed you’ll likely just have more and more casualties, especially during migration. birdstrikewindowfilm.com/?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAApmixV1wJeN6imT9UhDjZBSuhBdsN&gclid=CjwKCAjw1NK4BhAwEiwAVUHPUFBnL2Zg8L20-6SiZwc7e2yzf9z1VD1qy3DOsEceV2a3i0mn2uZfKBoCPFcQAvD_BwE
