Great video! I have a love/hate relationship with pro tools. More hate to be honest. There system rarely works with updates, they are terrible with customer service, and they have an insane amount of issues. Frankly, I do not understand why they are the industry standard. But, I am used to pro tools so I will continue using it till I find something that I love. This video helped me a lot!

Thanks! If you ha an iLok key and a perpetual license you can just download and install Pro Tools on the new computer. That’s one of the benefits of having an iLok. Realistically, even if you use the license cloud the same process would work.

time stamp 2.02 Hey, I purchased a perpetual license and my versions of protools have stopped working. Now they want me to purchase a subscription for support and I have the funds to do so but, I won't until I understand why in the Avid site it states the following. "Trade In your Perpetual License for a subscription" I am not doing that, its supposed to be perpetual, why would I or should I have to trade it in at all. Please keep in mind the subscription I Wass looking at was the full year pain up front for $99 and it says cross-grade subscription. I mean, they have essentially locked me out of the software that I have a full perpetual license for.

I have a license for pro tools 10/11. I know I need to upgrade it for my new MacBook. Do I need to plug the physical ilok into the new computer while logging into AVID now that ilok is in a cloud(?). Also was the version 10 ‘license’ the same as a ‘perpetual license’ now? If I upgrade it like you said for 299 will that license turn into a ‘perpetual license’ ? Sorry you probably answered this but I’m very confused. It seems bizarre how expensive and convoluted all this. It disincentivises upgrading not only pro tools but operating system and computer. (Eg as I have been researching all this, it occurred to me I would save more money using an old Mac with an old version.) Most musos and engineers aren’t this well off lol. Pro tools is much loved and I’m sure rewarding existing and past loyal customers would be a mutually beneficial business model). For some people it’s expensive even to buy a new computer, a new interface- AS WELL as a DAW they already paid so much money for previously even if it was 6 years ago. Sorry for the rant just bamboozled by how hard it is to get my original set up all because I bought a new laptop! Thankyou for taking the time to explain all this to people in your videos. Thanks for watching! Yes, if you update it will generally remove your other version. I think an exception might be if you’re on PT10. Since that was the last version that could open RTAS and TDM plugins you could keep it, but it wouldn’t run on modern machines anymore.

i want to get into pro tools but there are tons of factors that is telling me not to -AAX only plugins -no virtual midi keyboard (they do have it now finally on 2021.3 version) -subscription based is not worth it specially if you are just a bedroom producer imo -iLok Pro Tools works best probably if its your first DAW but if not , it might become a problem specially if you own tons of VST only plugins

Great question, I was planning a future video to do a deep dive on this. Here is a link to each plugin that comes with Pro Tools when you are on an active plan: www.avid.com/pro-tools/plugins However, if you go off an active plan ie don’t pay the renewal rate you’ll lose a good chunk. Avid does offer the plug-in bundle separate for $5 a month though. It’s pretty reasonable. You could also go with popular third party plugins as well or potentially invest in the UAD plugins from UA to really take your setup to the next level.

Unfortunately not. Your best temporary solution would be to do the perpetual to subscription cross grade for two years. I think they give it to you for $199. And then, in two years you could buy a perpetual for $599. I'll be doing an updated video on this topic soon with the best info available.

Unfortunately you’d have to do the dreaded crossgrade to subscription which will give you two years. Once that runs out you can stay on the subscription path or get a new perpetual license.

Great question! So you can buy the perpetual EDU license by itself. I would actually get it from a company like @SweetwaterSound instead of Avid direct so you can call them with tech support issues. With Pro Tools 2020 you don't actually have to have a physical iLok key if your computer is always online. But, if you prefer to have it you can order it separately and then just move the license to the key. Once you order the EDU license you have to send a third party company called IdentiT your College ID within a month I believe to validate the license.

Good question! With a subscription you can install and use it immediately on the new computer. In fact, if the machine is internet connected you don’t need a physical iLok. Pro Tools will prompt you for iLok account when you boot up.

Avid stopped selling those direct for the time being so you do have to go to a third-party retailer that still has some available. Mauricio Campos below is correct that Sweetwater does still have some.

Hey Danny, you can actually buy an upgrade that Sweetwater still has some of and get it to the regular version for just $250. Thanks! If you get a perpetual license you’d have to pay $599. Then you get free updates for a year. After that you can keep your plan current for $199 per year, or if you don’t change your OS a lot you can let it lapse and use the version you’re on for 4-5 years to make it financially beneficial price wise.

Hello Farhan, that's a good question. If you get an annual license it runs for 12 consecutive months. If you get a monthly subscription you do pay more, but it does give you the ability to start and stop it on any given month. I hope that helps!

Hello Ryan, my question is I a.m on a perpetual license PT 12.8 HD and would like to see upgrade to a perpetual 2021.3 pro tools version, however my current computer I am on had bit the dust, the PT boot drive is still ok, being that I can just remove it from my 2012 Mac Pro tower. My question is can I still update to PT 2021.3 on a new computer starting fresh or does the upgrade have to be done on the PT old boot drive snitch runs a much older Mac OS?

Hello! Unfortunately there are only two options forward. 1) buy a new PT Ultimate (HD) license or buy a two year perpetual to subscription license for two years and then buy a full license in year 3. Those are really the only options.

If you own a perpetual license and don't keep it on an update plan you can continue to use it. If you're on a subscription and stop paying the software will stop working altogether. Once your perpetual license is off a current plan you have to pay to get it back on a plan with their reinstatement sku. As of right now those are only available at retailers and are $299 vs $199 that you would pay every year to keep it current.

@@englishmusic6182 That is a perk Avid gives you to keep a subscription and perpetual license current. They give you some bonus plug-ins. However, unless you absolutely love/need those plug-ins. You may be better off just buying key plug-ins and saving money on Pro Tools Renewals. It's different for every person/case.

STAR THE PRINCE Hey! Unfortunately, you’ll need to notify the iLok folks that your iLok was lost or stolen. They’ll deactivate the license and Avid will issue a new one. There are some fees involved in that I believe.

But when I open up Protools it is saying I need to activate a license in order to open it up. I thought that was what I purchased. A Pro Tools DigiLink I/O License!! Idk man. I'm so confused. Hey JCL Systems, you actually don't need a DigiLink license to run standard Pro Tools. That's only for using the Digilink port with Pro Tools HD. You just need a standard Pro Tools license in order to use the software with your Babyface.

Great question. You can install Pro Tools on as many computers as you want/need. But, you can only use one license at a time with the iLok license physical key or cloud license.

You can buy a license from someone. You would just have to pay the iLok account transfer fee. In a general sense it's probably best to get your own license because then you'll get a year of free updates. If you buy an out-of-date license and Pro Tools won't work on your operating system you'll have to pay a $299 fee to get back on a current plan. So, by the time you go through all that hassle it's probably best just to either do a monthly/annual subscription like we talk about, or buy a perpetual copy that you can use going forward.

Okay but even if I bought one that was outdated like a used Protools 10 I saw someone selling for like $100. if I did that and then paid the $299 to upgrade it to the newest Protools, wouldn't that still be cheaper cuz I would be paying like $400 compared paying $599 and I will still have a Perpetual license right? And they said it already comes with Auto-Tune purchased and installed and a few other plugins I guess. Sorry I'm just not sure how Protools works at all, but I did want to upgrade my software ( from GarageBand) and I just wasn't trying to pay a arm and leg for it. Cuz I've heard you also have to pay for plugins and auto-tune even once you buy Protools from avid, those don't come with it?

@@tazzmoore5143 Hey Tazz, unfortunately, there are no more perpetual upgrades left in the dealer chain. We just ran out last week so as of right this moment that plan wouldn't really be viable. Stay tuned though...I'm going to analyze the current state of affairs and do a new video on it in the next few weeks.

You should never buy licenses direct from Avid. Get them from Sweetwater.

Avid is no longer offering ‘reinstatement’ for expired Software Updates + Support Plans for perpetual licenses as of January 1, 2020. I have bought the latest perpetual license of protools because of that , they only offered to crossgrade from protools 12 perpetual to a year subscription wich i definitely think it wasnt fair , anyway havent updated protools since 4 or 5 years.

It’s true Avid stopped offering these last January. Sweetwater didn’t run out of licenses until last July. I’ll be updating this video soon with the latest options available.

pro tools is garbage, witrh having to have iloc and have the licenses, and link this and that, i bought it yesterday..i installed everything twicw because iloc says i have no licenses and from what im seeing i have to buy a usb bungel as wel,,,,,no support???? its insane, not worth it to me....im asking for my money back

Great vídeo. I been using pt for 14 years. I never ever been happy with avid política, seems moneygrabing. Their hardware losses Quality every new generation. I do not love them at all. Cheers
