thanks, ive been using anki for more than a half term. and i instealled heat map to keep track of the days i do anki. ive realised ive really dropped off mid way through october and been trying to figure out why. listening through your whole playlist made me realise my cards are too chunky, i dont solely use them for memorising knowlege (use for understanding concepts and such). i think ill stick too it and use my christmas holidays to reorganise my cards fully, add them all, revise them all through out the holidays (just before so i can space everyhting put over the two weeks) and do eam practise and get good at it seperately to anki. your word/google doc process has been a game chnager in my revisiin to refer back to in lesson and has been the one thing ive used through the past half term and a bit. thank for your videos theyve helped save my grades especially in chemistry (i average about 80-90 and i probs would ahve averaged 60-70 otherwise)

@@king-kb2ox Word, i actually ended up not doing it. i didnt use anki, i just hated it and couldnt get myself to use it, maybe i was using it wrong, maybe i was in the wrong heads space, probably that one. But i am planning on continuing my word docs after taking a litlle (4 month) hiatus. But either work. I like word better, google docs suck unless u need it for google drive syncage, but honestly it not worth it when its not very user friendly, atleast i havent found so.

There are so many big youtubers on anki. To be honest, your explanation was so simple to understand and the "custom study deck" was so useful with tag instead of making multiple sub-decks. Subscribed your channel. Wish i found this channel before 😊 Only 1 question bro. I couldnt understand the "tags" prefixed with numeric . What does the numeric mean in the tag ? Does it have any specific meaning ?

Could you give me some ideas of optimal anki settings for remembering a level content? I do the same a levels you did.

Hi, I would say the optimal settings are already the ones built-in. I only changed one setting and that was by going to any deck, pressing Settings > Reviews > Max interval and setting it to 60 days. That was because I didn't want any flashcard to appear more than 2 months later because, sometimes, you can become so comfortable with a flashcard that it can say it will appear 6 months later which isn't great!

ive got a question, im doing my re sits for Alevels this summer 2022 so in like 4 months. Ive got 4 months to learn and retain two whole Alevels worth of content For biology and chemistry. How should i go about this. Like should i read through my books for the subjects and then do exam questions or? Thanks

Hi, new cards are cards which you haven't yet been through before (ie, you haven't seen before or pressed any buttons one) whereas "all cards in random order" includes new cards and cards you have seen before. And choosing 100 cards is fine, it just depends on how much you want to study that particular day

Hi, I completely agreed with you so I set my maximum interval to be 30 days and ended up reducing it months before my exam to about 2 weeks. I hope that helps!

Thank you for this detailed video. Most videos use Anki for studying vocabulary, biology or historical facts. How can you use Anki for subjects like math and physics where there is more calculation than reading and remembering facts?

Hi. That's a really good question (and a good idea for another video). It is quite difficult to use Anki for maths and physics. If you look at my maths and physics flashcards from this video then you should be able to see how I "tried" to use Anki for those topics: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6C4iGinn9xsr6s I think the main difficulty comes in having to have a deeper understanding for those subjects. Sure, it's all well and good to know a formal definition but can you really "see" the concept when it is hidden in a question. I liked Anki because it made sure I came back to old facts and concepts regularly. In the end, what I found to have worked for me is to: 1. Understand the concept (eg, Leibniz's Law) to the point you feel comfortable explaining it by watching KZbin videos or reading the textbook 2. Make a flashcard on the concept and include both the formal definition and, most importantly, the definition in your own words. 3. When the flashcard comes up then explain the concept to yourself in your own words rather than reguirgating the definition word-for-word. The main point is not to get carried away learning facts and word-for-word definitions. Learn it as a concept. When the flashcard comes up, you can sit down with a pen and paper and pretend to teach it and if you think you've taught it well then you select "good", otherwise if you couldn't remember repeatedly then it may be worth re-learning the concept in a different way. Doing that should hopefully really understand the concept rather than memorising the definition. Of course, there are a few things that you are better of memorising because they may require university-level knowledge to understand or because there's little point knowing the derivation (like of Maxwell's Equations). Of course, you should focus more on doing exam questions because that's how you test your understanding. I hope that helps! Let me know if there are any questions you have because I think this is a really important point I should have mentioned.

Hi, sorry for the late reply! I totally missed this comment when preparing to head back to university. I mostly using basic flashcards and maybe, out of the 1,000 or so flashcards I had for 4 subjects across 2 years, I used cloze flashcards less than 10 times - mainly because I really struggled to put that information into question form. I also felt that cloze gave too much information away than a simple question would because of the surrounding words - my exams weren't fill in the blanks. I hope that helps a little bit though!

Hey, I tried using one of your Anki decks( physics one ) and I saw that it didn't load up the images associated with some flashcards, when I click on the check media button in anki it says I'm missing quite a lot of images and gifs. Is there a way to retrieve them as I don’t think they came with the deck? Thanks!

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I did reply to your email but for some reason it seems it didn't send. I think my settings on my email client may be a bit dodgy. But here's the email: === I'm not really sure what the problem is. I tried using the files myself and it still works. Maybe try delete those existing decks that you have downloaded and try re-downloading the flashcards from GitHub and importing them into Anki or updating your version of Anki as it may be a bug with Anki itself. If you want a safer environment to try this in, you can create multiple profiles on Anki (see docs.ankiweb.net/#/profiles?id=profiles ) and import the flashcards into one of those profiles. I hope that helps and do let me know if it still doesn't work and I will try to think of something else. However, it is quite difficult to analyse the problem when I can't re-create it myself. === I jus re-tried it and it still works. Maybe try a diferent computer or reinstall Anki (after backing up your existing cards). I hope that helps but I'm realy sorry, I cannot recreate the problem myself so can't be any more specific.

Great video Ray! Just a quick question, what is the maximum storage of flashcards we can have synced ? Won’t pictures take up a lot of memory ?

Thank you. And last time I looked it up, they said there is no hard limit on how much data you can have synced. Anki compresses images, I think, because for my 1000 or so A-level flashcards (with almost 200 images) only took up about 30 MB. I wouldn't worry about how much storage you're using because it's always less than you think

Hi, I only changed was under the reviews tab where I set the maximum interval to about 90 days for my A-level and then reduced it as exams came closer. That's because, eventually you get to a point where you have cards that will come up again after a year, even for the good button, which isn't great since that may be after your exams. As for new cards, I could manage about 30 - 40 a day so I changed that as well which was helpful after binge-making dozens of cards. I hope that helps!

Can you please make a video about using Anki for physics at uni? I’m in 2nd year theoretical physics at Imperial and I make flashcards for every lecture, however I’d really like to see how other physics students do it. Most anki videos are specific to other subjects (medicine, languages etc)

Sorry for the late reply. sure, I would love to do that at some point! If you want to see a really good example of how Neel (someone I've met who topped his year in Cambridge maths twice) uses it, you can find his Anki flashcards on this page: www.neelnanda.io/about (CTRL + F 'Anki'). I essentially do what he does. For some derivations, the algebra is mostly routine but there's a trick or some interesting setup which helps you get to the result. I mostly just remember that and it helps me whenever it comes up in the exam. But I will try to make a video sometime (perhaps not soon though!) Also, he has a post on his site where he explains how he learns stuff so you may find that useful too. I hope that helps!

Hi, the reason I say Anki isn't great for those is because it's difficult to make connections between different concepts since you're seeing each flashcard in isolation. It's great for remembering concepts but not so much for seeing how they fit into the wider picture (for that, I recommend scoping your subject which Ali Abdaal has a video on here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5uypoSelL-Fmbc) I still used Anki to remember concepts by writing down the best explanation of that concept onto a flashcard then testing myself on it and seeing if I can get along the right lines of the subject. It's great for keeping that ticking over. As for applying the content, I did exam questions from topic tests and past exam papers. They are really useful because it gives you invaluable exam practice and because it helps you make the connections between your flashcards in your head too. Applying content is one of the ways to make those connections, Anki alone help with that. I hope that helps! I am actually trying to develop a new system based on active recall and spaced repetition but for concepts. If I find it works well then I'll make a video about it so stay tuned!

Hi, I'm not very good with technology but had heard a lot ab anki, so I thought I'd try it out for my a levels, but after opening the program once, when I now try, it says it has updated and is 'checking', but doesn't actually open up, and I can't close it down, so I have to turn my laptop off and on again, do you by any chance know how to fix that?

Hi, after having a quick Google, it seems that most people just recommend to uninstall Anki and just reinstall it to make sure it's on the latest version (which should be 2.1.37+). Do let me know if that works!

Hi, I would say that's very unlikely. I've been using Anki for almost 4 years now and never had a problem due to a server error. Fortunately, every time you close Anki on your desktop, it makes a local backup of all your decks on your computer so, if something bad were to happen, you can still recover it from there (you can read an online guide about this and make sure you can do it to convince yourself). Don't worry about anything like that happening

how do you use custom study to do all of your cards at once for example the day before an exam

Hi, so on desktop, if you go to the custom study section then you can choose review ahead. I just set the number of days to 500 or some random large number. That way, you can go through all your flashcards in a custom study session. But, usually, I went for the option of studying by tags like I mentioned in this video because, like in the case of A-level physics, you know which topics from the specification come up on which exams so it's useful to tag flashcards accordingly then making a custom study for a selection of tags before the exam which you can slowly work through during the few days before. By that point, you will notice that you can recall the flashcards pretty quickly if you have been using Anki for a few weeks / months.

So towards the end of Year 12, you can imagine that it's about half that. I hope that helps!
