Much of what you point out, Chris, I had to figure out on my own when in my first band. My most proud moment was when I solidified a counter accompaniment to Little Big Town's "Girl Crush."

I would recommend learning the notes to all the chords of a song. This can guide the fiddler to what notes and chords are appropriate to play.

Thank you! I've been working on songwriting and recording my own stuff for the last 10 years or so, mostly on guitar, but violin/fiddle is my first instrument, and I've been getting back into it this year. I would like to work fiddle into more of my tracks, and now that I have a little experience putting songs together from the ground up, this makes so much sense... the usual way of learning violin/fiddle doesn't emphasize chord structures nearly enough!

Yes, I agree! Backup is mostly ignored both by learners and teachers of the fiddle.

This is wonderful. I've had some guidance but have mostly guessed my way through playing backup. My biggest challenge is as you mentioned, playing as a duet and allowing the other person to play some melody. I really need to study the more advanced chop past the basic rhythm.

Great lesson, thanks. I’ve been stuck on melodies of the session tunes. Really appreciate the ideas on backing a song. It’s harder than it sounds!

This was just a great summary of backup techniques...thanks, Chris! I would like to add one more point after many years of playing backup...record yourself! You will be surprised how frequently the simpler you play, the better it sounds.

Wow, I didn’t think I’d hear a fiddle teacher say that the fiddle risks just being in the way (on pop/rock) songs. I agree! I like playing the violin, I would like to learn fiddle skills, but I have to admit sometimes the violin is wrong for things. I love this content, I am going to study your videos

Great video Chris, way too many years of having to take lead on the fiddle, it's taking a lot of work to play back up. I think I'm going to need to return to basics and learn chords . . .
