sir, i'm from texas and I am just starting out in dancing.this is the first channel that really breaks down the movements, and what you did here sir with the split screen was a fantastic idea. The other day I gave myself the shin splits doing a plie, so as to not embarrass myself for class I took it upon myself to know some terminology and positions. I loved this video because it really showed me how I was hurting myself and now i can focus on working the correct muscle groups and practice safely.

This is the kind of mistake we hardly notice while exercising. I like your videos because they help me to really perceive them myself and correct any time I see I´m doing them. Self-awereness is a hard ability to achieve but it´s essential.

Your have three main muscles in your butt. If you work the medium and the minim which are situated at the top of the butt. Then you don't tuck under. Its when you engage the big muscle them one tends to tuck under. Maestro Greenwood

***** "Honey Bunny" is a insult. Do you know Andrew?: In support of Andrew I must say, its a -ballet technique video-. Technique supports artistry. Emoting feelings had to do with repertoire and should NEVER be taught in ballet class! EVER!! Ballet never was and never has been an art os self-expression. The dancer has to know how to do this, but once it is put onstage, the director/choreographer/repetiteur/regisseur is the person who -tells- the dancer what he or she should be feeling, projecting and saying onstage. This is not for formal classes. This is -only- for coaching sessions, with little if any exceptions.

i am 51 years old have always loved dance and have decided at 51 to learn the disciplines of this beautiful art form. Never had any formal training but work out 4to5 times a week. Once was somewhat agile but I'm very stiff and awkard but that's expected since i'm a beginner. At age 51 can i achieve the grace, limberness that I so love in ballet? Would like someday to instruct less forunate children in this lovely art form.

0:00 to 0:45 you say the dancer is tucking under. Can you clarify? Tucking what under? Also you say they're not rolling in - again can you clarify? Rolling what in? They look essentially identical to me.

Tucking under is almost hunching forward and sucking your lower stomach back and in. Look at exactly 1:00 on the "wrong side". Her body is not straight compared to the "right". Rolling refers to the feet mostly and it's a small difference but from the side view her heels are leaning forward more instead of pressed to the ground. You can see it affects her knee placement ever so slightly as well, with her knees more forward and less aligned over the feet.

For those who has built the correct movement pattern initially, grace and elegance is naturally revealed. For those who has built the incorrect movement pattern initially, a life long course is one reparation followed by another reparation. Ballet does teach one the moderation rather than ambition and excessive passion.

You'd be amazed how much you can accomplish with socks or barefoot. Focus on building strength, balance, and flexibility. While trying to master the basics as best you can. Once you finally make it into a dance studio one day, you will be ahead of the game and happy that you dedicated time to prepare. Don't let a lack of dance lessons right away discourage you into giving up. 😊

It is difficult for YOUNG students to know what is meant by turning out too much. Isnt turn out supposed to be a GOOD thing? Suppose you could mark a center dot on the floor under the center of the dancer. Now suppose you could picture an arrow from the center back of the knee through the front of the knee. Imagine you could draw a chalk line on the dance floor to the direction this arrow pointed. Suppose you could do this also for the other leg. Feet should be along this arrow. Turn out is to be with the hips and thighs (upper leg above the knee). Turn out is NOT about forcing the feet and angles further than this. If your teacher is trying to get you to force turn out at your feet and ankles or by putting your back in some funny position, change teachers. From a doctors point of view, the dancer on the left is doing better than the dancer on the right but feet are still past her knees on the left. I suggest that young dancers lay on their sides with feet pointed forward relative to their body. Use the hip and upper leg to roll the leg outward. (Doing this exercise while NOT standing prevents using the floor to hold the foot and ankle in an unnatural position) Here is another turnout exercise that you all can practice while waiting for the school bus or to go into a class. Stand with feet facing front. Now put your weight on one leg with the opposite foot just off the floor. The foot is still facing front, but a friend could slide a piece of paper under that foot if you wanted. Use your hip and upper leg muscles to rotate your leg outward ie where your knee rotates toward facing your side. As a beginner you will be very unlikely to get there but any rotation at all will strengthen these muscles. Again that foot you are rotating SHOULD be off the floor so you cant use the floor as a cheat. All the rotation should come from ABOVE he knee. If you have theraband and can get a loop of that or a similar loop of stretchy material, then excellent. YOu can put the loop around your legs above the knee. Bend your upper legs 90 degrees to your body and your lower legs 90 degrees to your upper legs. You should be in the position you take when sitting in a chair. Use your hip and upper leg muscles to rotate your knees apart. Go immediately back together. Once this gets TO easy to do a number of reps of this, then try doing the exercise but holding a second or two when your knees are apart. (Why must the band be above the knee? Because with young growing legs, it is NOT proper to put sideways stress on the structures that tie the lower leg to upper....which would happen if the band was ON the knee or BELOW the knee. Exercise safely please).
