Literally. They make it seem like it's such a crime trying to learn from tracing. I did tracing when i was a beginner artist and it actually helped me specifically with anatomy. There's nothing really wrong with it unless you go and claim that it's yours and not give credit to the original artist. I'm really invested in this series so i hope people will stop being dramatic and let dish learn

As an artist myself who has been drawing for almost 8-ish years, ITS OK TO TRACE FOR PRACTICE PURPOSES! Tracing is a great practice when you want to break down shapes of a drawing or practice coloring! Twitter is just being too dramatic about tracing so its best to ignore them. As long as you are tracing for practice and never consider your traced art as your own idea or “original”, you’re completely fine! I just wish these people need to realize that learners are still learning and need to stfu about things that are not a big deal. Also, great job on practicing art!

You're right. It's even encouraged in eastern counties like Japan, training by accuracy basically trace then redraw, I did it once on a paimon drawing, I got better at stylization because of it. The only thing is I hope dish realize is that tracing Lineart mindlessly probably won't teach you much. It's very vague shapes that you don't understand yet, tracing becomes useful once you know the rules of anatomy proportions and perspective, and you can understand the form of the subject. Otherwise it's kinda pointless to trace.

tracing is encouraged for practice, even by professional art classes. It helps you understand the framework, shapes and over composition of certain drawings. I've seen people saying tracing is bad a lot on the internet the last couple years and it overal confuses me, because almost nobody actually claims the original art is theirs. Dont get discouraged by people claiming its bad, as long as you always note were you got the original from, there is absolutely no problem with practicing and posting it.
@Wishy_Designs
@Wishy_Designs 2 жыл бұрын
@dish THIS! RIGHT HERE! IS THE TRUTH! Tracing is definitely encouraged while learning to draw! Heard multiple established artists who teach art themselves saying that a good way to learn shapes and framework is tracing, regardless if that is a photo or someone else's art. You are not stealing, you are picking an art piece and learning to understand it. Don't mind the people on twitter who say that it's bad because they have no idea what they're talking about. You are in the beginning of your journey. Have fun with it. Love the new series!

Very true!! Tracing is useful for practise as long as you don’t take credit for what you traced, because its easy for an audience to immediately assume an artist created every aspect of their art themself. Its always good to give a heads up if youre posting it :))

It just seems like such an uneducated perspective. I haven’t met an artist who would agree with this weird twitter rhetoric ever irl and I’m in art school lol Hell, I was just having this conversation with my professors regarding hand tracing an existing font for a non-profit project. They said it was OK because no matter how hard I tried, I wouldn’t get the same result as someone who designed the original in a program - and that it was especially fine since it would be just a base for making my own version.

I feel like people who discourage artist who traced for learning purposes, would be in shock when they realize that almost (not all of them) art school teach their students who are often beginners, to trace & copy other famous artwork especially to develop your own style. Like I'm in art & design school, and literally spend almost 2 years just to copy and trace artwork from famous classical painters, and contemporary artist (in my case, anime & manga artist because I'd love to develop those art style). I do understand the concern of "But they'll get praised for tracing artwork" but then again, there's nothing wrong for a little appreciation for learning art just for encouragement, as long as they acknowledge that they're copying artwork. It's done MANY times, even professional artist do that all the time. I just hope that you, dish, don't get discourage from people commenting how "negative" learning by tracing art, because if people do it correctly, it would help them improve faster. Love this series dish, I'll always wait for the next ep!

I'm still learning color theory and perspective myself, but most of the time, well not all of us, but mostly me and my artists friends though, we just go by intuition, what felt most comfortable to us and suited the most to us and for the piece. for colors i usually go for single or double complementary colors, nothing too extreme or focus on one single color but with different saturations, but most of the time i just do either complementary, adjacent or monochromatic. hope this helps! and I'm learning with you too dish, lets enjoy the process.

I have a recommendation it's called 'Blue period' for those who like anime and drawing, before dish's videos that anime made me start again with my art journey, the manga is even more detailed but if you have struggled being perfectionism or felt unmotivated about your progress this anime is such a good way to understand that it's okay to fail sometimes and not everything has to be perfect as long as you're learning and enjoying the process. As someone who likes drawing as a hobby but doesn’t know how to improve in certain aspects, I think I will rewatch the anime soon. I really want to just immerse myself in the content and enjoy it to the fullest instead of just putting it off. hey dish! i just wanna say you're doing so well on your learning experience, and i really hope you keep going despite the negativity. i want to reassure you that you did nothing wrong, and tracing is okay as long as it's for the purposes of learning, and as long as you don't claim full credit for the piece. as long as you're not profiting from it directly, it's perfectly okay to post these things because you made the effort and you're proud of your progress, it really should be displayed for everyone to see! be proud! and don't listen to every "artist" out telling you off. it's unconstructive and not at all helpful. every artist is constantly learning, even big artists that are popular, be it digital art, music, cooking, etc. just keep doing what you're doing, and learn to parse advice and criticism because not everyone has good intentions. just keep growing, we're here to support you on your journey.

don't listen to the people that say to never trace they don't know what they're talking about. it's a great way to practice lines and shapes and it is personally something that has helped me improve. I think one of the main reasons people get upset about it is that they think you want to take all the credit and disrespect the original artist, which sadly does happen but the way you did it was not that. just make sure you let people know if you are going to post it that it is traced and to always credit the artist or source.

I can tell you, WITH 100 PERCENT CERTAINTY, that people who say things as discouraging as that to artist who clearly stated that the trace was for practise, are actually morons who have no idea how art works. Even professional artists CONSTANTLY use references in order to understand how they can properly do things like drawing hands in a certain angle. They don't trace, yes, but point being that the art is constantly based on other things to make sure it looks like what the artist is trying to portray. For beginner artists like yourself, tracing is exactly how you start learning the ways to look at a source material to develop that eye for referencing. It's almost like referencing but more heavily. As long as you didn't claim it as your own, there is no reason you should remotely feel bad that you're tracing to practise.

I am self-taught and also about to get a degree in art, so let me impress upon you the extreme importance of copying as an early studying method: you do not learn much by trying to make up everything yourself. It is very important to copy when you’re first starting out, so important that it used to be called having a master or being an apprentice. Master painters, sculptors, and architects would have workshops full of apprentices who would often paint/sculpt/draw exactly what the master was painting/sculpting/drawing right next to them. You learn the muscle movements necessary for making different specific marks, the weight you need to change value and intensity, the care you must take in choosing colors, etc. from copying. Tracing not as much, but copying what’s next to you is so important for learning in the beginning. Because once you learn to copy, you can use that muscle memory, use that implicit knowledge, to create original pieces. That’s how other painters/sculptors/architects became masters as well. On an adjacent note: Twitter is a hell hole with no sense of nuance. If you are a new artist just starting out and are excited to share with others, avoid twitter at all costs. Show your friends and family directly instead, and once you post an original work you could absolutely post the works you made while studying. It helps show how you got where you are now, it shows progress. You’re doing great, dish! Keep going, no matter what. (I also know this is from a month ago but I felt it important to share my thoughts with everyone else, as someone studying art academically and making it recreationally. Just keep making things.)

When I first started learning, tracing reference photos really helped me learn anatomy until I could do it by myself. there's really nothing wrong with tracing. the main problem lies in tracing something and then posting it as your own without credit, especially if you're tracing another artist's piece instead of just a reference photo. however, if you make it clear that it has been traced, then there really is nothing to be looked down on. as an artist myself, i highly encourage tracing in the beginning stages of learning how to draw. to be able to follow those mastered lines really gives your hand comfort in moving a specific kind of way, and your motor memory gradually becomes used to making much more confident, beautiful lines. it's a fantastic way to learn how to draw things in a specific style. i often hear ppl say things like "if you're tracing, you're not actually making the art," but fail to recognize that so much more goes into making art than drawing out the basic lines. the artist also needs competent skills in shading and lighting, to name a few techniques off the top of my head. the very fact that you traced in order to develop your coloring skills just proves my point further: the whole point of your artwork wasn't even to display mastery in drawing lines, but to work on another skill that must be mastered to create a satisfactory piece of art. great progress, and don't listen to ppl who don't know what they're talking about! i'm really looking forward to watching dish on this journey :-)

I've been in the art community for about 6 years now, and have been studying it at school for 3. This is my graduation year and I'll be going to university this fall, and though I know my art has improved through all these years, I still have moments where I feel unfit to enter a good university. Watching this series makes me reminisce about my first year learning how to draw, and though it was a much rockier and less organized experience, I find these videos nostalgic in some way, and they motivate me to keep learning and improving. Even with 6+ years of experience, I still have much to learn, and a style do discover and define. Your motivation and determination is admirable and this series is extremely inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing it with the public, even considering the added backlash you will have to face because of it. Excited for Mondays now!! Much love dish!!!

Posting traced art is where it gets complicated, however, using it to learn is completely okay. I think it’s still totally fine to post it as long as you note that it’s not your art and that it is in fact traced. Tracing is a really good way to practice art and tons of professionals even do it to get better! I’ve been drawing since I could really hold a pencil but I’ve never really fully studied anatomy or color theory and Dish has been really motivating me to do that, so thank you. You’ve already grown so much it’s crazy! Keep it up

actually, heres a tip that i do a lot when im struggling with shapes and stuff: oftentimes, ill trace over the part of the reference photo that im struggling with and then hide the photo, so i just see the trace. then, i can see how to better translate the reference into lines, and can use that to try to draw it in the actual sketch :) it helps me quite a bit, and i find it more enjoyable than straight up tracing the original and using that instead

About the tracing thing. It is COMPLETELY OK for beginners to trace in order to learn, especially from official media like games, screenshots from shows, or photographs you took yourself. What is not ok is to trace other artists' work and claim it as your own, which you did not do. Tracing can help you get the basic understanding down quickly, and/or help you see what professionals do in their art that can make a certain anatomy part easier to draw. For me, I traced a lot of circles and 3/4 angle faces and hands in order to understand how to draw them. I'm still not as good as I want, but it helped me immensely make progress in my art. People in Twitter who harp about all tracing is bad, are generally not artists themselves. They just see that artists they follow are sad about how people have traced their works, and made the conclusion that all tracing is bad. Your situation and those artists' situation are completely different. Ignore them, Dish. You are doing what you can to learn and improve your skills. Keep it up

Your improvement from just a week is amazing! You picking the colors to what you see in an image is quite difficult, but you did such a good job! Even I have a difficult time doing that, and tend to just use the color picking tool 💦 But! You’re doing an amazing job so far. Color theory is a tough cookie to crack, but you’re really learning it in stride! I’m excited to see what you learn next week ☺️

Idk if you'll see this buuut from what I've learned from doing art for a few years is that, to me tracing is not as bad as people think, especially when you're beginning. It's one thing to trace over an art piece and then call it your own, and tracing to practice for your own benefit to get better. I remember tracing as a kid and feeling bad for doing so but later then realized all the tracing I did ended up really helping me with my progress and helped me figure out my style. For example, I would be tracing or trying to recreate someone's art, but as I drew I found out stuff I liked and didn't like which helped me determine my own style. It's definitely a journey 😅 and am indeed still learning! and only other thing I can say is don't be afraid to share or worry too much about what others think because at the end of the day it's just you creating something you're proud of and that you should be proud of. Anyways, you're doing so great! It's been really fun seeing your progress, it also makes me motivated to do my own art too☺

Hey Dish, as an artist & a lover of sharing true art, I am so happy that you are learning this way. Don't listen to the people who tell you tracing & reference images are bad. This people only wish to gatekeep our community and that is the worst thing for the art community. Yes, tracing is looked at as bad, IF you are SELLING that work as your OWN. But if you are tracing to learn color theory, it's like a coloring book. That's literal how we as children learned how to color. I think that people who want to learn art should always be encouraged by artists & those who create art should always inspire those who are learning. As true artists, our learning never stops & those who stop learning never grow. I hope you keep at it. I honestly think you are doing amazing! ✨💞✨

Hi Dish! Glad to see your drawing journey!. Tracing is always a prickly subject, I'm happy that you addressed the topic and heard your audience's opinion on the matter. Also applying color theory for outfit coordination is very smart and you might find yourself using this new knowledge day by day outside of drawing. Personally I recommend Marco Bucci's channel for color theory, I find his videos very easy to follow and digest for both beginners and advanced artists. Hope to see your improvements in the future, don't give up!👍

I don't personally recommend tracing for learning. As an artist myself, copying an image on a different paper helps you to understand the way that object works. If you trace it instead, you won't even get to try to understand it. :3 It wouldn't matter for practicing colour, but it's good to start by understanding the shape

Not to mention there’s a lot of different views on what is and isn’t “good tracing practice” with only agreed upon idea being to just not post them. So I’m glad you’re keeping at it! I hope things are less stressful moving forward.

"our art is an amalgamation of all the artists before us" anyone whos been drawing for a long time can tell you bits and pieces they steal from other artists, wether its how you draw your eyes, how you do your linework, your fav color palette, how you shade ect. its all inspired from someone else. tracing as a beginner is totally okay, it really makes you look at subtle but effective details the artist used that you wouldn't have noticed at a glance. the only people who are gonna look down on you for using training wheels are people who've never tried to ride a bike. you gave credit where credit is due and thats all anyone can ask of you. i look forward to seeing more art videos dish :)

As someone who’s been an artist for many years, I have kind of always struggled with color theory. While I’ve definitely learned a lot along the way, and can color with intuition pretty well, it’s definitely been one of the things I feel is lacking in my art. Similarly, I just recently decided that I want to go back to the basics and figure out ways I can challenge myself and grow my skills! (I want to be a visual development artist for animation studios someday ;D) I’m so glad you’re doing this series, because it’s giving me a lot of inspiration to keep trying, and I don’t feel so alone! If you ever feel discouraged in your own art, know that it’s a part of your journey in pushing the boundaries of what you can do! Now matter the skill level, I love that us artists can help each other out even in the smallest of ways :’)

I have been drawing ever since I was a child and I have mainly only drawn traditional art until recently, I stepped into the digital art world for the first time and it's a lot different than I'm used to. I don't have a drawing tablet or an Ipad so I am just using my fingers until I can afford one. I find it really brave for you to take so much time to learn how to understand art. I find it so inspiring that you are taking the time to learn color theory and perception and how to color in pieces. Even I struggle with that even today but I think it's because I never DEDICATED myself to fully understand them and I think I really should almost follow with your journey and almost start from scratch in my art. Color is SO SO HARD! And it takes so much time to learn and it personally is one of my weakest skills since I NEVER color anything due to my use of graphite. Starting digital art has really pointed that out to me more than it has ever, and this week I think I will fully color one of my art stretches that I have been slowly working on. By the way, tracing in my eyes is TOTALLY okay!! The only instance that it isn't okay is when you claim it is yours and/or it is used for profit. One thing I do personally in my art is taking a reference photo (other drawings can work too but are often seen very hated on even though it is the exact same process but I prefer photos anyways so it isn't a huge deal to me.) and draw out the basic shapes of the body in separate little pieces. I draw circles where the head and any joints in the arm or legs are and use what I call "deformed cylinders" (technically trapezoids, a big base at the top and a smaller base and the bottom with lines connecting them) to connect and create a basic shape of arms and legs. For the torso, I separate it into upper, middle, and lower parts. The upper torso is a very thick "deformed cylinder", the middle torso is very weird because I draw a circle. It's what I find easier and is totally a thing to experiment with. The lower torso springs out from the middle torso and comes back in to either form a triangle or another trapezoid. This differs between masc and fem bodies but overall is very similar besides the proportions and curves of the body. But always include the reference photo you used (unless it is your own body.) in case you want it for future references or you pose it online. You are improving so much and this is only week two! Keep up the great work even if you don't continue drawing after one year. :)

As an artist that's been drawing a few quite a while now, I think tracing is really good when practicing. Your hand gets used to naturally making certain shapes, and it can help to learn anatomy as well. I used to trace chibi art a lot because I had no idea how to draw, and now I'm able to draw hot people with a completely different art style. Point is, people on Twitter have no idea what they are talking about, and as long as you credit the original art you used for learning, It's totally fine Your coloring was really nice, especially on the eyes!

All I can say is wow to 2 things. First off, WOW. You are learning so fast! Your art work is already improving so much and it looks amazing so far! Honestly I think by the end of this series, you could be a professional if you wanted to! Second of all, WOW PEOPLE ARE RUDE. Don't listen to those people on twitter. It is 100% fine to trace an art work for practice, and it is only wrong if you claim the art as your own work. Which you obviously didn't, and you let people know that it was a trace. As someone else said in the comments, that in professional art classes they trace art work for practice and that is completely right. Tracing is pretty much a tool for learning, so people should not be so dramatic about it. Like hey, has anyone ever printed a coloring sheet? That is literally art work that someone made and you print it off and color it for fun, or to learn. It is not bad at all! Continue your art, and don't pay attention to the not-so-nice people on twitter. I'm really excited to see more of your art work!

The way I think about tracing is it's like when you're a kid and you get those worksheets that you practice tracing letters and numbers on, then practice on a separate sheet. It's all to practice and learn! I think you're doing just fine and you were doing it for coloring not even to take for credit of said drawing. i love this progress dish! as others have said, don't get discouraged from people on twitter, drawing is hard and tracing is absolutely fine if you are just starting out and don't understand forms and anatomy yet. it lets you understand what you're seeing. my tip: circle for head, lines for jaw, line through the middle of eyes, line at the bottom of nose, and line at the mouth. genshin and anime aren't realistically proportionate but they do follow the general rules of face anatomy! eyes in middle of head, end of nose halfway between eyes and chin, and mouth about 2/3 down from the nose. if you want to study values (lightness or darkness of colour), i recommend turning an image into greyscale and then only painting in greyscale too, and start with the lightest and darkest tones to grasp contrast! can't wait to see what you do next!

Hey Dish! I absolutely love this series, it takes a lot of bravery to start something from scratch :D . as someone who has been practicing art for almost 8 years, I can tell you I still trace artworks that I like! people seem to be so focused on the outcome, and how it will be perceived by others that it seems like they totally forget the meaning of the path. the goal is the path. In my opinion, Art was never meant to be pretty or right, it was just meant to exist, without apologizing for what it is. A sculpture made of trash (of other people) is still art... creativity doesn't appear from nowhere, it stems from what surrounds us

Dish, i have to say that im super proud of how your progress is going, yes unfortunately the art community is a bit harsh on certain rules that as you start posting and learning this tends to happen a lot, but do not be discurouged! also, idk if anyone has said this before to you but I'm gonna put it here simply cuz it's what helped me with doing art and developing my own stuff: when drawing a character try to copy the drawing (not tracing) but just figuring out how that character looks from the reference and drawing it, and then take a turn at actually tracing the art and have a feel for the ways each thing has a form, and then look at your first drawing you made with just copying from the reference and reflect on what you did differently and try and copy from the reference again, you won't see immediate progress, but it does help to reflect on what you are doing. And now for creating your own art pieces, the way you can think of it is making a collage, pick a pose, draw it, find a character and draw them into the pose, find an expression, put that expression onto the character, find an outfit, put the character in that outfit, etc, etc. i thin this really helps in starting to create your own art at the start, and it's absolutely an ok thing to do cuz you're not using ONE thing and copying it to the t, but your mixing a bunch of things and creating your own unique thing. anyway, hope this helped you out a bit (or anyone else reading this and wanting to learn how to draw) and good luck with the rest of your journey! i can't wait to see how you progress!!

This is just my opinion, but I would say that you should totally post what you want, as long as any references or other artworks/artists are credited and all that because I don't see what kind of problems anyone would have with art that has credits unless they're just looking to argue or they're jealous of your talent, which would be plausible

dish the tracing thing is okay. i trace screenshots and poses (NOT from original art, from shows and free license stuff) to practise colour, anatomy and movement. There’s a fine line between tracing for practise and tracing art and claiming it as your own. the former is fine if it genuinely helps you get better at what you seek to get better at.

I feel like as long as you're not claiming the drawing for yourself, it's perfectly fine to trace and even post it. You were learning color, not the human form. You probably haven't even drawn in an anime-esque style before, or if so very minimally, so it's completely natural to trace it and work on the thing you're actually practicing rather than getting frustrated on getting eyes the right size or the placement of the mouth. I think Twitter likes to blow things way out of proportion, and smth like this is honestly not nearly as big of a deal as they think it is. I've literally never seen a professional artist criticize someone for tracing as practice. I've actually seen people who have been doing art for decades trace over some famous works to get a feel for the original artist's style. Your improvement is amazing, and there will ofc be people mad at you for stuff like this because you're a content creator, but I hope you can keep believing in yourself. :)

Don't worry about those tracing comments! those people, like it's common on twitter, are just trying to complain about something. Everything you did is in context, anyone talking shit is just being an idiot. You can keep tracing to practice color, and you can still post it when you specify if it's something you like or are proud of, don't let them take this away from you. Though I totally understand it might just be better to not have to deal with this garbage through the journey. It's up to how you feel about it of course, but it's important to know how much impact you're letting someone have on your decisions, especially in art. You're doing great, from the perspectives you've used in practice I'm excited to see how things turn out when you apply composition next.

I have a feeling I'm going to be following this series excitedly for long as it goes- it makes me so happy to see and actually really makes me want to work on my own art more. For the tracing thing- I think most people have already said it but seriously, don't give up on using tracing to practice. Its a incredibly helpful tool to practice with and near every artist uses it to some degree. There'll always be people who will disagree and reply very rudely to it, but try not to let it discourage you. Twitter itself tends to have a very vocal rude side to the art community, but i guarantee most people will encourage it. Youve made amazing progress so far, and I can't wait to see how it progresses! Ps- if you're having trouble with posing, I'd suggest using a stick figure first and building it up. The simpler you break down the body, the easier it'll be move. (Similar can be said about things like clothes and hair- start with shapes then go back to detail after.) Limited color palettes can really help push your brain to figure out were things work as well. I hope you have a wonderful week!

Hey Dish, I know you already have a ton of comments regarding the tracing part of the video, and I also want to share my support with your journey thus far! I started drawing seriously when I was around 12 years old, and to make me feel like an cool epic anime artist, I did a lot of tracing, and for that it helped me on the road to drawing independently. I also learned the hard way posting traced art online, and as a kid felt scared of continuing to my post my art because of that backlash. Learning from that, I know in my personal experience that tracing was like a gateway into art, and as you mentioned "it gives (you) a better understanding of color and shapes." I totally understand your frustrations and discouragement after the twitter replies, however, your knowledge now will help you improve your art going forward. Seeing this journey makes me think of myself being excited to learn art back then, and I'm glad we, your fans, can get to see this journey to the end. Please keep going Dish, never be afraid of art, because it surrounds you always at the end of the day :)

Color Theory is really hard, I just wanted to add a tip to understand color a bit more, try color mixing! I know that you don't necessarily don't need to worry about it since its digital. Last thing, for portraits its really helpful to go from simple shapes that you recognized in your first video to complex :). People are just gate keeping and get uppity when art is involved, especially when you're involved in a community that can be kind of toxic. You're doing such a great job already. As a content creator people will want bring you down just because of that. You sketch of the building was great. A lot of painter do use reference photos and will blow up images to get the details correct. I always loathe painting or drawing or even taking pictures of myself. Your videos were and are incredibly motivating and encouraging to keep going no matter how big or small progress I make. I feel like we are drawing buddies who take a mutual course and progress together! I already feel so wholesome and confident in both of us! May the wind lead us to the point that we find our art styles and feel comfortable drawing so~ Can’t wait to be a part of this 1 year journey more!!🎏 Thank you so much Dish, for truly being yourself!🐸

As someone who has been struggling with art i appreciate that you show your reflection while learning, it's really reassuring to hear another person go through the same things as i have. Seeing you persevere through the "art twitter experience" and reflect upon what really matters is so inspiring. I know it feels like there's a long way to go but to me it feels like you already have learned so much.
