For the 2D example, if dim3 threadsPerBlock(16, 16, 1), then wouldn't one want dim3 blocksPerGrid(sqrt(N)/16, sqrt(N)/16, 1)? Then the total number of threads = (N/(16*16))*(16*16) = N.

Would love to start programming! Unfortunatly I have been trying for days to install the cuda toolkit and get any examples to run without succes! Why doesn't it just work?

This stuff is under low level. But in the future I'm sure someone will make an explicit optimisation library for a C#,C++ or C compilier that converts your average coder's code into highly optimised code that that uses Cuda when possible. I'll probably be dead by then unless AI get's it shit together. An AI Compiler, theres something AI could be tasked with that's better than advertising! Might even lead to programming in logical speech!
