Some of my best friends are Czech. They frequently speak it around us to each other. My other friend once learned to say “I know what you’re saying” in Czech and they freaked out! They use it to curse each other out and tell each other off. I never know what they say so I am using Duolingo and learning the bad words from you. I hope to one day scare the shit out of them with knowledge.

My father in law teaches me the fun Czech words. He likes to say "ty vole" and "DoPrdele" a lot in conversation. Always fun practicing my Czech over some Becherovka 😜. He taught me to tell my future aunt a long time ago..."Drž hubu, doprdele, ty krávo", not speaking any other Czech at the time and she did not speak English. I guess I timed it just right as she was telling me something in Czech. My father in law died laughing as she just stared at me thinking I knew Czech. Funny times...

I think the most appropriate translation is "dude!"

Literary translation of 'ty vole' is 'you ox', meanining 'you donkey', 'you fool'. The case being vocative (addressing your interlocutor, nominative is 'vůl'), the form is 'tykání' (not 'vykání'). Today it is used as a quite universal interjection, but i think that originally it started as a rebellion of undergroud teenagers to mutually confirm their 'underclass' status. Basically argot. I also think they used it as way of declaring that they are part of the subculture, because upper and middle class would not use such derogarory phrase.

Sracka and soustal are what I learned growing up. My Papaw started saying them and then my Grandma along with my aunt and me. They came in "sayings".
