I am french and trying to learn danish... I try to find some tips to improve my pronunciation. It was really hard to properly say godmorgen, I finally found out that if you say something like "good mourn" (a bit dark) without "d" and faster at the beginning then your Google assistant will understand. (Yep, I am working my basics with Google Assistant)

Informative. When "Good morning= Godmorgen, Good evening= Godaften, why the translator is rendering in " Good afternoon= God eftermiddag"? (With a space)? Which would be correct for " Good afternoon"? "God eftermiddag" or 'Godeftermiddag'.
@DanishClass101
@DanishClass101 10 жыл бұрын
Hi pranit bhagat, Thank you for your comment and your question. "Good afternoon" is "Godeftermiddag" in Danish, when used as a greeting. The translator might not be familiar with it as a greeting, because it is less used than "Godmorgen," "Goddag," and "Godaften," which are more standard. If you have any other questions, please let us know. Thank you!

@DanishClass101 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Borhan Pourkand, Thank you so much for your comment! Yes, you are absolutely right. "Vi ses" means "See you" and "Vi ses snart" means "See you soon." But sometimes "soon" is implied in "vi ses," if you know you are going to be seeing the other person again soon. It is completely up to you which one to use, but since Danes like to keep things short, the most common one is "Vi ses." Hope you will continue to have fun learning Danish!

Some words seem German due to Danish and the other Nordic languages being related to German through the old language Germanic. The same is true with English. Using English you can sometimes translate what Danish words mean just by the spelling. Goddag is very close to "Good day" God - Good Dag - Day This is why it is generally easier to learn a Germanic or Nordic language if you already speak a language in the same language family, as your first language. Good - Got - God - Guten

English and Danish are both Germanic Languages so they share a lot of similarities. In fact the British Isles were settled by two tribes which came from today's Denmark, the Angles and the Saxons. So it's no surprise that they share many words.
